Merton Abbey Mills

About

Merton Abbey Mills is the perfect family day out. A historic arts village on London’s River Wandle with restaurants, live music, theatre and a farm!

Story

Merton Abbey Mills is the perfect day out for all the family. A historic arts village on London’s River Wandle, just a short walk from the tube station (Colliers Wood, northern line), it is a beautiful spot with an array of award-winning, little, world-food restaurants, a riverside pub, pottery for the children and theatre shows all weekend for little ones at affordable prices. It is a regular spot for live music and festivals, next to free urban children’s farm, Deen City Farm and just a short walk from free National Trust site, Morden Hall Park.

Reaped in history with a socialist legacy from great men such as Stephen Langton (Archbishop of Canterbury 1207-1228 who helped to develop a peaceful settlement which was used in the original issue of the Magna Carta), William Morris (great socialist and artist), Gilliat Edward Hatfield (a philanthropist and socialist) to name just a few; Merton Abbey Mills is one of London's hidden gems and part of what makes our capital city so special.

Beautiful. Tranquil looking at river weekday mornings with a cup of coffee from m. E. D. Cafe Lovely waterwheel. Birds. See commorants. Duck. Moorhens. Occasionally kingfisher
Bit of a ghost town, restaurants and bars are rarely open when I visit and when they are open, look pretty empty and run down. Unfortunately the coffee at the cafe is terrible or else that would be a nice spot to sit. Shame because it’s such a lovely nature area with such a rich heritage of craft
Went on a Friday. Only 2 x shops open. Loads of places to eat. Used to be so much better. Wonder if it's more of a weekend venue. Used to have shops open later in the week, obviously no more
This is such a lovely are for the locals of Colliers Wood. Really beautiful vibe going on which gets absolutely rammed when the weather is really hot. It was so sad during the whole covid lockdown, to walk past this area, desolate with no people or atmosphere whatsoever. This place really gives Colliers Wood a lovely little villagey feels, with the lovely sound of the mill churning in the river. The bars are just great too. Lovely staff. Beautiful energy, and music playing all the time. Colliers Wood is a special little area, and this place is the absolute epitome of the whole experience that is Colliers. Well done everyone!
if somewhere was to be defined as the coolest place in the world then I guess this is it. It's tradition and level of interestingness is off the scale. The unpretentious depth of cool is here and plain to see. From the Utopian genius of William Morris and his devotion to an amazing aesthetic still his vibe resonates through the place. Its the more charming and divinely historic and unmodernised and away from the world in its own country kinda way. The river provides a great feel and the music drama food bars and sheer life is a breath of fresh air in any day or night . The busy children's theatre is it's amazing gift to the people of south London. Sunday music on the bandstand is worth a journey. The mini venues and bistros are so lovely it's my new fave home from home. 10/10
I liked this place. It is considered a 'mall' with shops, cafes and restaurants. The stores were closed due to the lockdown but still, it was enjoyable to see the place. Has a nice scenery next to the river. It is nice to walk past it on the way to the park as part of the daily exercise. Will be looking forward to visiting when it opens.
Nice historic place to visit even when the shops are closed due to lockdown. The former textile mils were associated with William Morris and Liberty & Co.l, but are now artisan shops, studios cafes and restaurants.
Great place to relax after a walk trough the park. Good food and cheap prices as well. E.g. a burger with fries for under £6
The Mills are a hidden gem of sw19, with a lovely selection of pubs restaurants and assorted local businesses. Beautiful in its own way at every time of year always with something different going on. Recommend.
Quaint and interesting bit of history plus live music on Saturdays, food stalls and artisan stalls and good food in the bars and restaurants. Altogether a good place to lay back and relax in a Saturday.
