Couldnt get past the apparent gatekeeper Olivia Jones who blocked me from receiving any support.... I had been attempting to seek 'free legal support' for 6 months re an employment tribunal matter. The person answering the email/phone line therefore gatekeeper for those trying to access legal help from the service. This person either has no care or empathy for clients; or is completely incompetent. The first time I was told she would email the form I had to complete to book an appointment. She didnt send it, so I lost 3 working days. Then after I called again she did send it. I asked for the earliest appointment that she offered, I replied to confirm within the hr the slot, however I realised the day before said appointment that she did not confirm it. This meant another delay of at least 10 days before being able to access advice...! I had an employment court case looming with zero legal advice, also CAB offices and helplines have all been closed. So I asked to make a complaint as I had confirmed an appointment that should have been honoured. To this, said person then told me that as I was complaining, she could no longer book me in for a consultation... I have called and emailed at least 20 times since to resolve this/get a consultation that was desperately required, yet ZERO REPLY. This is the only service available for people like me without a budget for legal fees > £15,000, and I am so disappointed that for the sake of one staff member, I could not receive any advice. Although having read other comments it sounds like if I did have a consultation then the advisor would have likely been as unconcerned and apathetic as the receptionist/telephone advisor. The fact that this is also a publicly funded body and is the only resource currently available from the employment tribunal list of 'FREE LEGAL SUPPORT', is really disgraceful that they offer so little to people in dire need.
I would’ve given no stars if possible. Completely unhelpful and unprofessional. You get given a caseworker who sounds like an uninterested child. His name was Sal and he made numerous mistakes and never listened to anything and then said I was eligible for legal aid but I was then advised I wasn’t. I chased for 2 months for an update on whether they could help me or not. My emails would go ignored, when I called the office the miserable caseworker would make excuses for why the solicitors couldn’t come to the phone. Kiaya Thomas wouldn’t help and was very rude and arrogant. When I finally got an update it was to tell me that they’ve basically wasted my time. AVOID at all costs. You’d be better off representing yourself! The only useful person there was Sarah Marten and she has now left I understand.
I contacted Merseyside Employment Law 2 years ago regarding dissability discrimination, I was put in touch with Leslie Rose and can't thank him enough for his time and patience. It has been a harrowing time physically and mentally and he has been an absolute rock throughout. Some days I don't know how I would of managed without him .His compassion and empathy whist maintaining a professional position is outstanding. I wish him continued success for the future ,if only there were more earth angels like him god bless you for all your help ...sincere regards Teresa
I was referred on to Merseyside via Legal Aid. I was so nervous, I'd never done anything like this before, and I'm probably not the easiest person to work with. Mr Leslie Rose advised me on my case, and was the best lawyer I could have had helping me. He worked incredibly hard to make sure everything was completed to the highest standard, and was so amazingly supportive throughout the entire thing!! I could not have asked for no one better, and will honestly always be incredibly grateful for the support, guidance and advice he gave me.
I was referred to Merseyside Employment Law by the Civil Legal Advice helpline. My solicitor, Leslie, helped me with a discrimination case. At first I was a bit annoyed because it took him a while to determine the legal status of the organisation I wanted to sue, but I learned that mine was not a standard case. However once he had the information he needed he drafted the paperwork very quickly and negotiated a reasonable outcome. I was very pleased with the way Leslie handled the responses I received; he helped me avoid petty arguments and a lot of wasted time. He also pointed out things in the agreements I would never noticed myself. I have used other lawyers in the past who took thousands of pounds in fees, so I was totally shocked to find out that because they are a charity, I don't have to worry about a huge bill at the end. I am very grateful for their help. I was angry about the discrimination because I worked very hard, but Merseyside Employment Law took some of the sting out of a disappointing situation.
I used to work in the insurance industry dealing with firms of solicitors all the time so have a fair amount of knowledge of solicitors and the levels of professionalism you should expect. I had occasion to use this firm for a Discrimination matter after going though the civil legal advice line. The alternative firm was Stephensons solicitors. My calls were regularly ignored and not returned and the solicitors and handlers come accross as arrogant in not doing so, and also very lacking in skills and care. You are dealing with very junior people. The head of legal was very protective of her staff for them not returning 4-5 of my calls which is inexcusable. I don’t mind people being busy but it takes nothing to phone up and give someone an idea of when response will provided. I had a deadline and they left it very close to the same, worrying me with no response. Then I make a formal complaint and the owner who isn’t even a solicitor comes on in self protection mode excusing her colleagues and then swearing at me. I can honestly say don’t deal with this firm at all. If you are wanting help for a Discrimination matter get a contingent CFA no win no fee arrangement with a more reputable firm or pay someone to help you. MEL are a charity and have clearly been set up to exploit legal aid fees for discrimination cases which makes their case loads based on limited fees of the legal aid agency, therefore it is no wonder they don’t have the best solicitors and their approach is poor. Avoid at all costs. If you want help with a better solicitor on a Discrimination matter contact me and I will put you through to a better one! Stephensons have shared legal aid and CFA work so will be better. Choose them at the point you’ve gone through the legal aid advice line, even if it is an employment matter, as they will undoubtedly be better.
I contacted the Merseyside is one of the only solicitors I could find who would be able to take my legal aid case regarding discrimination. I have had a just and successful outcome. Thank you to Leslie Rose and the team for all their good work.
