Story

OUR FOOD

Lebanon is the direct descendant of the ancient land of the Phoenicians. Those ancient sailors, known for their well-developed sciences and trade, travelled all the Mediterranean and greatly influenced – and were greatly enriched by – the cuisine of those whom they reached via their trade routes. The Phoenicians introduced wine and olive oil to the world and much later the Lebanese introduced Hommous and Tabouleh.

Our food is ‘nouvelle vague’ Lebanese, with its melting pot of respect for tradition and attachment to modernity. The freshest ingredients are sourced from the market every day to be combined with a subtle harmony of herbs and spices. This produces delicate combinations of flavours and aromas, served as succulent mezze, couscous and stews, shawarmas, but also as mouth-watering grills and fish dishes.

OUR FAMILY

The Barakat family has an established history in catering and hospitality which dates back to the 1930’s when Abou Joseph (Hanna) Barakat established “Al Ahweh” in the picturesque village of Ain Ebel in the mountains of South Lebanon. In 1948, Abou Joseph’s Eldest son Joseph (A true entrepreneur) took over and expanded the operation to include hospitality, catering, entertainment and retail.

Joseph’s four sons came to Europe to pursue higher education, and after successful careers in catering, entertainment, retail and investment banking, the four brothers set up the UK operation in 2002. The first restaurant was opened on the Fulham Road and instantly became a local favourite.

In 2008, Joseph’s younger brother – Pierre Barakat – established Mandaloun on the other side of the Atlantic in Jacksonville, the largest city in the sunshine state of Florida.

In 2010, the group’s flagship restaurant was launched in the Westfield Shopping Centre in London. The venue was designed by multi-award winner Lee Broom.

In 2011, Joseph’s eldest son – Barakat Joseph Barakat – established Mandaloun in the eternal city of Rome, Italy, in the prestigious area of Via Veneto.

We are always looking to expand and build on our successes especially as more of the family’s new generation join the ranks.

OUR RESTAURANTS

Mandaloun is a group of independent, family run restaurants located in Great Britain, Italy and the United States.

Our flagship restaurant is located in Westfield London. Mandaloun Westfield is a heaven of style, class and delights. This was the second time restaurateur Zack Barakat and multi award-winning designer Lee Broom have collaborated together after their much acclaimed creation Coquine, in South Kensington. Mandaloun incorporates exclusive fret cut pendants and walls lit with unique carnival bulbs to give the place a warm yet crisp oriental feel.
