This was our second stay which was very generously made available to us following complaints we raised after our first visit on May. Although we really liked the hotel, room, service and breakfast, our room was directly above the wedding venue. The music was unbearable and drastically affected our stay. Anyway, our most recent stay was extremely enjoyable and restful. Even though there was a wedding on again during our visit we were put in a room away from any noise and disruption. We were in room 5, a junior suite that was massive and very comfortable. The en-suite was massive too with a gigantic walk in shower. The view was lovely and the bed massive and comfortable too. We had a complimentary evening meal which was lovely. The location of the hotel is perfect for Belper, Derby and the surrounding Peak District. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We will definitely be looking to stay again in the future. All in all our second visit exceeded our expectation. Thank you so much for our relaxing 2 night stay.
I have been to this hotel a few times for afternoon tea and it has always been lovely. Yesterday my husband and I got married here and we had such an amazing day. It was a lovely smooth day where Nicola the wedding coordinator couldn't do enough for us. She was calm and attentive and extremely helpful. The food was delicious. I can't thank you everyone enough for such a wonderful day
We were kept awake by a dog howling in the next room from 10.30pm to 2.30am. We did complain and eventually the owner returned. The bathroom fan was fault. Overall the room was acceptable. No USB points for mobile charging in the bedroom. Our granddaughters wedding was handled professionally and the food/wine was of a good quality. The bar staff all seemed to be unhappy in their work, which reflects back on to the customers. Breakfast for the two mornings was very good and the staff extremely helpful. Perhaps the addition of a selection of fresh breads and cheese would make a welcome change. This is a third visit to the Makeney Hotel.
Stayed for a wedding. First room we were given was horribly dated and small. Mismatched bathroom, no double glazing, up and down many stairs. We asked to change it, and were given a room in the courtyard. This was much better, modern, more space and a very nice bathroom. The hotel is very pretty, and set in some gorgeous countryside. The staff were very helpful, and changing our room was no issue. There was a nasty smell in the corridor by The Milford Suite, which the hotel staff hadn't noticed unbelievably..it was very pungent until I pointed it out to them.
Rooms were ok. Bathroom needed somewhere to hang a towel while in the shower. Had to hang it over the door. But overall it looked like it had been renovated recently which was nice. Great gardens and space for dogs to run about and stretch their legs. Parking was easy. Breakfast was poor. Most of the food was gone when we arrived so waited for eggs, sausages, hash browns which were all gone. Needs a better system to top up when low. The food that was there was on the cold side as it was all buffet style. Hot water jug was empty. No cold water to drink so would be nice to have an option of filtered water with the juices. No milk jugs for the tea.
Wonderful building, excellent food, and superb service. Comfortable bed, though the room was rather dark. The bathroom was a bit odd it was an accessible room - see below. However, this was a minor niggle in what was a delightful weekend away to celebrate our anniversary. Rooms: We stayed in an accessible room in the courtyard, which was very quiet, and had 2 comfortable chairs, as well as a very good bed. But the chains for the window blinds could not have been reached by someone in a wheelchair, and the only place to put things in the bathroom was on a high ledge above the toilet which didn't have a lid - this would not have been reachable from a wheelchair either. The bathroom had no hooks, not even a toilet roll holder, and the tiniest sink I've ever seen - not room for the kettle, almost no room for two hands at once. There was no surface other than the ledge to put things on. This was a large room, so a bigger sink and some storage could easily be included. Food & drinks: The online link to the restaurant menu didn't work, so we didn't know what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised that dinner was more like a pub than a posh restaurant, and the food was excellent - in a beautiful dining room.
Had a really lovely stay on Saturday night - lovely staff were all so kind and thoughtful - nothing was too much bother and I can honestly say that the staff were all so friendly and welcoming … they looked liked they loved the hotel and their jobs … very refreshing! Beautiful grounds and a wedding that was taking place looked perfect! Will definitely stay again… A great quiet nights sleep Nearby activities: We were visiting for a Gin tasting at White Peak distillery which was excellent - distilled whiskey, rum and gin … very good!
My daughter and son in law have just had their wedding there, it was wonderful, friday the 13th and no disasters, a perfect location, lovely hotel with character, my room was perfect, a touch of luxury with a beautiful view. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the food delicious and plentiful. I had been twice previously for afternoon tea on the run up to the wedding and will certainly be returning.
We were there as an extended family to celebrate a family birthday. We were told of a wedding party there at the same time, but it didn’t matter. Our rooms were excellent, dinner and buffet breakfast first class, and rest of time relaxing in a pleasantly quiet bar.Rooms: 5/5
The outside and main areas look amazing - very welcoming The corridor down to our room looked tatty - filled patches on the walls but bits of plaster left on floor, dust and dead moths on windowsill - weren’t cleaned up until our last day On first impression the room looked really nice, then we noticed scuffs on the walls, one of the TVs had a cracked frame, the windows were filthy inside and out, lots of cobwebs. One window couldn’t be left open as the catch was broken, and one windowsill needed repainting properly. The balcony deck was dirty and slippery, with furniture covered in cobwebs and peeling paint, broken leg on the table and the pot plant used as an ashtray On our second day we went out at 9:30, locked the door and put the refresh room sign on - came back at 2:45 - door was unlocked but room not cleaned, receptionist contacted Housekeeping Team but said didn’t know if they could do anything that day - it was tidied eventually. We ran water for the bath - lots of little bits of black grit. Sauna was good but needs instructions. Disappointing considering it was the most expensive room, felt let down Food & drinks: Good choice for breakfast Had dinner at the hotel a couple of times and food and service was very good
