Every single dish we ordered was spectacular, Here's a breakdown of what we tried:nnSlow-Cooked Lamb Shank: This was pure perfection. The meat was incredibly tender and fall-off-the-bone, so flavorful and aromatic. It was served with buttery mashed potatoes and a rich homemade gravy that complemented the lamb beautifully. A truly classic and satisfying dish.nnSlow-Cooked Beef Shoulder: Similarly, the beef was braised to utter tenderness and was so addictive! The deep, savory flavor had us taking big, happy bites without stopping. The bacon mashed potatoes on the side were incredibly fragrant and the perfect comfort food pairing.nnScotch Egg:This was a revelation! It had three distinct layers: a crispy outer shell, a flavorful minced pork middle, and a perfectly runny soft-boiled egg at its heart. The textures and flavors were incredible on their own, but when paired with the homemade garlic aioli, it was so good that we immediately ordered a second portion!nnMini Haggis: A delightful and delicious dish! The sweetness of the pumpkin puree harmonized perfectly with the savory, fragrant Haggis and the creamy mashed potatoes. A wonderful combination of flavors and textures.nnGiven the exceptional quality of the food, the very reasonable prices, and the friendly service, it's no surprise at all that this place has a constant queue during dining hours. It is absolutely worth the wait! We cannot wait to return and try the rest of the menu. Highly, recommended!
Makars is my favourite place to eat when we visit Edinburgh! The food is top notch. We didn’t reserve, just showed up. The wait was circa 30 mins but they take your details and text when the table is available.nnThe restaurant feels cosy with seating over two floors. The food is quality ingredients cooked to the highest standard. The haggis is made fresh onsite and you can taste it.nnThe price reflects fairness and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone.nnIf you are not eating haggis, neeps and tatties with an iron bru in Edinburgh then what you doing!
A bit of a wait to get in because it's so popular, but is easy to ignore because you can just put your name in and wander around the Royal Mile window shopping or grabbing a drink elsewhere until they text you that your table is ready. The food is remarkably fantastic. There are many choices and the staff are very helpful in suggestions of both food and drinks. We shared the salad with scotch egg and then my husband had the lamb shank and I had the beef shoulder. They were both very tender and delicious. The Thistly Cross cider was bright, refreshing, and paired well.
Menu is shown in the images. My photos of the food don’t do it justice! The place is spotless, welcoming, and the service is excellent, friendly and attentive without being overbearing. It’s a must-visit spot for lunch or dinner in Edinburgh. The meat melts off the bone and is full of flavour, and you’ve probably never had mash quite like it before! No service charge is added which is nice to see, so tip the servers directly. Advise to book, however they do have walk-ins.
From the moment we were greeted at the door, with no reservation, and found a table we knew we had found a special place. The staff really cared and clearly loved their job. Good surroundings and beer was lovely. Great eco credentials and vegan, vegetarian options. The food was amazing quality, like homemade but if your mum was a world class chef. The mushroom tour and home grown mushrooms was a particular USP that I haven't seen before. Every time we are back in Edinburgh we will book a table here.
