Really beautiful. The management at the reception are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are quite spacious. University of Glasgow also provides a Welcome kit. Bed linen and mattress is also provided. There is also an attached bathroom. Most flats are 3-5 sharing with a common kitchen. The Common Room is a great place to meet new people and just to relax.
Pros: Receptionists will help you maintain your equipment quickly. Vending machines are cheaper than it in the university. A PS4 in student common room. Cheaper laundry than other student residence £2.4 for washing, £1.2 for dryer. Not many bugs around. Free university gym membership £125 per year for normal membership. Clean public area. Free parking. Cons: Small rooms, corridors and bathrooms but with a high price. Receptionist will not receive your parcels for you but other residence do. Receptionist will not print the contract for you but other residence do. Far away from university and library at least 25 mins’ walk. Far away from the nearest subway station 15 min Kelvinhall. Far away from the nearest train station 16 min Partick. Far away from the gym 25 min G12. Fire alarm check frequently in the mornings which is annoying. Security or all kinds of check frequently during last semester and took away my adapter when I was at campus. The nearest supermarket is 10 minutes’ walk Tesco express. Poor sound insulation.
The price is the only thing about this place that is okay. The west end is notoriously expensive, and that is important to keep in mind. That said. Periodic room checks- Are you kidding me? My landlord wants to search my room for contraband like this is a prison cell?? Bedding- worse than a hospital. The mattress springs are felt through the surface of the mattress and I wound up buying a topper to be able to sleep without bruises. Service- staff are rude and unhelpful in solving problems. They don't know much if you have questions, and I've found dealing with them more trouble than it's worth. Laundry- SEE EDIT situation is absurd. You need to download an App, connect that app to a debit card my US visa wouldn't work, I had to wait until I finally got a UK card, and now that i have it, payments still aren't processing. Why not just a tap scanner on the machine or *gasp* coin operated? The app is the only way to pay. I was told when I got my contract that I would be in a silver room with extra space and extra storage that I wanted for athletic gear, when I actually moved in I was definitely not. So far honestly I really wish I didn't live here. *Edits. Laundry situation is improved, there is now a card reader that connects to the machines. Machines still go down periodically and stay down for a while, but Major improvement. Also, enjoy dance music. Because most weekends in the summer you'll get to hear it from the nearby venue whether you want to or not. I love a good show, actually I've been to multiple shows at that SGW3, but a concert you didn't ask to go to is just distraction, and the windows being closed is minimal help. Feels impossible to study or work in my room. Something is always happening, either some kind of room check, internet cut out, building rehab, etc. For a neurodivergent person, this place does not provide a consistent environment, and I have struggled with studying all year here.
I stayed here for about a year and I wish my stay could have been more better. I am just gonna focus on the cons so you can decide if its worth 9k. I definitely don't think it is worth the money. There are many affordable student halls that provide more facilities. I was annoyed by the fact that the heater was not available 24*7, the reception won't accept your parcels on your behalf. There are monthly inspections which are annoying coz of lack of privacy. There was mould in my room and when I reported that they just painted over the wall. The club is right behind so it can get really loud during weekends. Overall I would give this place a 2 on 5, not recommended.
Disadvantage: 1. The network is always disconnected for no reason. 2. Poor sound insulation in the room 3.They will access to your room every month for different resons. 4. For classic ensuite, the bed was small, the mattress is of poor quality and I slept in it very hard for months. 5. They don't provide 24h heating in the winter. 6. Receptionist don't receive parcels for you. 7. The reception is not opening 24/7. This is not a big problem, but compared to other student accommodations, most of the student accomodations in Glasgow would do this. For emergency issue at night, you may meet problem. 8. Far from campus. 20-25 minnutes' walk. 9. If the price is fine, I'd accept all the shortcomings. However, it is not. Advantage: Repairing is fast, for emergency repairing, they would handle it quickly. In conclusion: You have better chioces.
Bad: The accommodation is expensive. Isolated and situated away from the University. No elevator and the staff from the reception will not help you at all to carry your luggage to the room either. The receptionist will not receive your parcels. Frequent room inspections and fire drills. Bathroom fittings are old. You might find bugs in the room and sometimes spiders and bees in the kitchen. Good: The accommodation staff will fix or replace anything as soon as you inform them. The common room is well maintained.
My friend stays here. so, as a guest i like the room and living space, kitchen area and common room for games. Price is the same as cooperative to what I pay for my student accommodation. But it's but far from my Uni. Nice area and grocery stores is really near. The rail station is in walkable distance to go city center. Did I miss anything to add. My opinion: visit the Museum, park and other places if you are staying here. All the best.
Internet: Each flat was covered by an Ruckus Wi-Fi 6 access point, and has an wired Ethernet port in the bedroom. The data plan is 300Mbps and it was covered by the bill. Bad signals in the kitchen and stairs. Equipments: The inventory inside of the bedroom are replaced for the new tenant. Beddings are comfortable and warm. The radiators heating just open for specific hours instead of 24/7. No security guards. No gas stove. No elevator. Environment: The north wing is surrounded by trees. Fresh air and animals like squirrels. The wall is so weak so that you can hear the sound from adjacent bedrooms. Two railways located at the north side and the south side of the residence. All bedrooms, kitchen and corridor are carpeted, which is difficult to clean. COVID-19: A hand sanitiser was set up at the ground fllor of the building. The residence provides a huge resource package with foods and supplies for incoming students. Frequent greetings and self-isolating guides from the office. Location: 8 minutes from Tesco, Boots, Chinese Shop Koi Grocery , iMart . 25 mins to the Learning Hub of University of Glasgow. 20 mins to the Partick Station train and subway and Kelvinhall Station subway only. Price: It is worthwhile because the unmetered network/power/water and UofG Sports membership. Staffs here are very friendly and they quickly response to your maintenance reports. All tenants are postgraduate students from the UofG. More safe and peace than public accommodation. I would say I am eager to renew my accommodation contract for the next academic year, but unfortunately since they prioritize the 1st year incoming students, the positions for previous registered students are not guaranteed.
Avoid this place at all cost. 1. Tiny rooms even ensuite with a private bathroom that does not deserve the name - too expensive. Extremely cheap, plastic fittings and shabbily built. 2. The walls are very thin and made of ply. You can hear everything. 3. The university and Maclay employees have a pathological obsession with fire. Once a month is fine, but not almost every single week more than once. It is so badly planned that you will have people from Servest enter your room to check the fittings, then strangers appear unannounced to check the plugs and fire alarms and the kitchen. There is almost no privacy and your space is not your own. They always have an excuse to enter the apartments and your room. 4. Cheap, makeshift bed and a miserable, spring mattress. 5. They turn off the heating system at certain hours. This is NOT IN THE CONTRACT! Expect to FREEZE if you work in your room in the morning until the afternoon. They have not arrived in the 21st century. 6. The university residences preach about "Sustainability", but there is no substance to their values: plastic is pervasive, fittings are cheap and fragile, the building is a mere facade and does not keep warmth it is made of plyboard or a cheaper material!, ceilings sometimes leak and they try to cover up the problems with quick, cosmetic repairs. Expect to fill out forms for any meagre excuse this is not in the contract, either. 7. Maclay Residences is not very close to the university. Prepare to walk about 15 to 20 minutes up and downhill. 8. The noise from the train is annoying - it is THAT close that you can see it! 9. Noise from the nearby club until early morning hours every weekend and horrible construction noise from a company that feels the need to transport tractors and excavators at 3am. 10. It is simply not worth the exorbitant price. The employees seem to adhere to the illusion that the UK is still an old, tired Empire. They didn't get the memo - Maclay is a vestige of the past and they are happy to milk postgraduate students for all the money they can get for shabby rooms.
Pros: - Nice flats - Free parking - Great location - Very easy to live here. Everything is arranged for you. Cons: - Expensive - Internet can be annnoying - Reception doesn't take large packages if you are not in your flat for the delivery
