Beautiful place to visit with plenty to see and do. Huge estate, which is great for a good walk with plenty of scenic views or flowers. Head into the house and take your time in each room to take on all the details, so much history has been preserved. There is a trail inside the house for children that keeps them both occupied and interested as you go around. Staff are all friendly and knowledgeable, very welcoming to adults and children. Toilets available, gift shop and free parking. Play area is good sized.
Fantastic stately home with lots to see both inside and outside. Lots of rooms stuffed full of furniture and personal items that make it feel homely. The Room Steward's have a wealth of information who can answer any question. A lovely gift shop full of tasteful item for the home as well as some local beer, jams and chutneys, biscuits and sweets. The grounds are extensive with plenty of walking round pretty gardens as well as The Cage, a hunting lodge on the hill. There's also a lovely little orangery with tropical plants. There's also a cafe to rest and recover with home made cakes.
Beautiful place. Only downside was kids play area was closed for renovation on the day but we'll be back! Something for everyone. Perfect for walking, coffee and ice cream, strolling the house and gardens. Kids outdoor play area; when open : Nice touch having free to borrow balance bikes for toddlers. My toddler enjoyed having his first ever ride on one.
Visited 25/10/2022, very popular location and lots of parking but fills up fast too. Great staff at the Timber Yard cafe, very helpful and getting requests done with ease for food and drink. Lots of walks to be done, family friendly and buggy friendly. Also steep incline to house from car park so there is a mini bus you can use to get you up to top with ease if you need it. The grounds are very scenic and worth a visit, highly recommend
Attended for Christmas event with the kids. Had a great time and kids loved it! Car park is big, found it extremely unsafe due to ice. Like an ice rink! After our booking was finished we were able to access the house and view a few rooms. Only 6 rooms due the Xmas event House is full of history and found the volunteers to be friendly and knowledgeable. Left disappointed, due to poor weather. Gardens were closed. Understandably Will definitely return to view the house and maybe with the dog to explore the grounds.
This National Trust site is great day out, as they have extensive grounds, many rooms open for viewing in the house, cafes, used bookstores, and a shop. We spent about 45-50 minutes in the house as there were quite a few rooms over a few levels to see. There is not ton of signage in the rooms, but there are small highlight books in the first entry hall that can be used, and the volunteers are very helpful with interesting tidbits throughout. Make sure to check out the brief timeline on the way to the toilets - it is on the wall and can be easily missed. It is slightly hilly from the car park to the house though accessible parking is available closer. The toilets are clean, there are two used bookshops, and the two cafes have a limited selection but a few egetarian options and many sweet/hot beverages.
Love this amazing heritage. Staff is awesome. I can't praise them enough. Helpful, smiling lovely people who cares not just about customers, but place itself. I couldn't go inside of a hall, because it was a maintenance daymy mistake that I believed to Google maps and didn't check their website But gardens with small architecture were fantastic. Excellent maintenance, beautiful flowers, hilly relief, plenty of things to see and do. Thanks!
Magnificent property in a charming location. I love the house, the gardens and the deer park. We used our free National Trust pass to visit the place. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. Parts of the estate were used for filming the series of Pride & Prejudice. When you leave the house you can walk towards the hill/ deer park. There is a great view towards Manchester on one and Peak District on the other side.
Huge and ornate beautifully decorated and maintained House and gorgeous large gardens and contemplation lake with some wonderfully interesting history. Definitely well worth a day trip! As with most National Trust properties, it’s informative, friendly and one way system throughout the house with friendly staff and volunteers to give information about the history of the house and buildings. Plus second hand book store, nice little cafe and clean toilets, baby changing facilities etc. Really worth visiting, wear your walking shoes and give yourselves plenty of time to explore it properly and get the most out of this stunning property!
Impressive stately home with over 1400 acres of beautiful park to walk and rome, gardens, trees and Italian gardens are beautiful. The stately home is impressive and imposing and definitely worth a tour round. Shop, cafe, toilets, plentiful car parking. Beautiful red deer to see. Friendly and helpful staff. Even though it rained in the afternoon and was quite windy we had a blast! We spent about 4 hours including lunch at the stately home cafe. All in all a great day out and highly recommended. Hope the photos do it justice. At the day of our visit price entry to view everything was £14 each adult.
