TL;DR - Great spot for no frills seafood. After a long drive from Glasgow, we were starving. We parked in the towne centre and set off to find some food. Unfortunately, it was a little past 2 pm and most restaurants near the square close at 2 pm before re-opening for dinner service later at 5 pm. Thank goodness for The Lower Deck. Their dining room was quite full, but luckily they had a couple of open tables near the windows. We were seated immediately and ordered a half kilo of mussels and the cold smoked salmon. The mussels were cooked just right and their tomato sauce really paired nicely. The smoked salmon was tasty...I really liked the crackers that came with the salmon. They were almost like biscuits. We were really pleased with our meal.
Manage to snag a seat at 8.30pm, right before they close. The food was amazingly fresh and delicious. The portions were very generous and we got 3 mains and a soup for about 60pounds. The restaurant is typically very crowded but they do not take reservations. So would be good to head there before the dinner crowd!
Food was okay, wanted to eat F&C but 16£ was too expensive imo. Had calamari instead, unfortunately they didn't have coleslaw. Overall the calamari were okay, but not what I expected from a seafood restaurant. Staff was nice. Place was crowded. Would try another restaurant if I come back to portree :
We were exploring around the Isle of Skye for the weekend and since it was a Sunday there were not many restaurants open in the area. After doing a bit of research we found that the Lower Deck restaurant was open and accepting walk-ins only as they don't offer telephone bookings. When we arrived there was quite a large cue outside and it was raining so we got absolutely drenched standing outside for 45mins until a table was free. Once we got in the restaurant there was only 10/15 tables so I understand why we had a long wait and with Portree being the tourist capital they will always be popular. Myself and my Girlfriend both ordered the fish and chips which were served within 15/20mins which was fantastic as we were really hungry, unfortunately we didn't realise it was breaded as wasn't given the choice to have it battered as we ordered so quickly. The fish was really good but did have some small bones in the tail which we picked out. Still slightly hungry we both had the chocolate brownie and ice cream which was really good. Our visit was good but I wouldn't hurry back as it was just fish and chips and having to cue for so long put us slightly off too, the pricing is a little high end but being in Portree I understand, if your in the area The Lower Deck is worth a try.
We came back to try this restaurant after not being able to get a booking last summer as the reviews looked good and it always seems to have a queue. Overall I felt a little let down, and was expecting better food and selection, especially for the prices they are charging. But I the staff were super friendly and the service was good. We had calamari and black pudding to start, but the calamari was so deep fried it felt like I was at a take away. The black pudding was nice enough and the accompanying chutney went well with it. The calamari didn't taste bad but if you have access to fresh fish then why deep fry the hell out of it. So many other places do a light, tempura style batter, that is so much nicer. It just felt a little unimaginative. For mains we had scallops and hot smoked salmon, and I would say I was a bit disappointed with the options in general. I expected a broader selection of fillets, other than just salmon. The scallops were cooked well and tasted fine, but again I wasn't blown away. I didn't think the beetroot puree went well with them personally and potatoes and a side salad also felt a bit simple. The hot smoked salmon was again fine, but nothing fantastic, and lacked any depth of flavour. Overall the food was fine, we had no complaints in terms of quality, it just felt like they are missing a trick with all the fresh fish they have, as it all felt a bit bland and for the price I walked away feeling a bit let down
My partner and I dined here while on holiday on the 13th September. Delicious fresh seafood, friendly service. There was a big line out the front although this was just for take Away and they had plenty of tables inside for us to sit.
Food rivalling the service. Excellent. Google listing said 6pm but it opens at 530pm. Got late for the 1st sitting and had to queue up. Those who areived post 7pm didnt have to queue as heaps of people from the 1st seating exited at a similar time. Ordered the salmon from the traditional menu and from the specials, the mussels and dressed crab.
Good quality food but there's always a queue outside the restaurant with wait times of an hour. Not a five-star review as got covid from this place.
Right down on the water front, The Lower Deck is a relatively small resturant that does not take reservations. The tradition here is to queue up outside the resturant they don't take your name or anything, they come out the door and seat the next group of 2 or 4. I think it would be difficult to come here with 5 or more perhaps. We waited for about 15 minutes and ot a very nice table they are all nice. There was a dressed crab salad on the special this night and it was huge and we picked every last bit. The beef and alle stew was nothing short of good comfort food that sticks to your ribs and make you feel warm and comfortable. I had the mussels and could just barely finish the 1kg serving I think it was more TBH. Everything was worth going back for!
As it was lunchtime we ate at The Deck, the Lower Deck seems to be an evening restaurant. Whilst the food choices are limited, and as Portree is an area that catches shellfish mainly, we decided to go for the Seafood Platter for 2. It was well worth it! The service was excellent too. Whilst the facilities are not as high class as some of the other restaurants we could not fault the food. Would recommend if you are happy without the frills which we were.
