London Rowing Club

Story

London Rowing Club is the second-oldest of the non-academic active rowing clubs on the Thames in London, United Kingdom. It was founded in 1856 by members of the long-disbanded Argonauts Club wishing to compete at Henley Royal Regatta. It is regarded as one of the most high-performance and successful rowing clubs in Britain and its Patron is HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh.HistoryThe club was founded in 1856 at the instigation of Herbert Playford, A. A. Casamajor and Josias Nottidge for the purpose of promoting rowing on the river Thames and winning medals at Henley Royal Regatta. These three formed part of the crew that won the Grand Challenge Cup at Henley in 1857. LRC is the second oldest of the non-academic type in London; the oldest is Poplar Blackwall and District Rowing Club having taken that status from Leander Club which gradually migrated from 1897 to 1961 to Henley on Thames in Oxfordshire. It is one of the seven founding clubs of the Remenham Club at Henley and was one of five clubs which retained the right to appoint representatives directly to the Council of British Rowing. This right was removed from those five clubs in September 2012.

We had our wedding here at the start of April this year and the venue was perfect!! Annabel and her team are absolutely pros, anticipating any and every need, with outstanding service and kindness. We had our ceremony and celebrations here and no one wanted to leave at the end of the night! The balcony, views and memorabilia make the venue utterly unique which our guests loved, despite none of us being rowers! The long room was perfect for all the big moments, especially for our ceilidh in the evening. The suppliers and teams they work with are top-notch and we honestly couldn’t have wanted anymore for our wedding.
We attended the Oxbridge Boat Race here. The staff were helpful and friendly but this was one of the more disappointing hospitality sporting experiences considering the price GBP 318. 1. Having booked early, it was disappointing that a few weeks before the event they started selling spots for a hefty discount. Moral of the story is to wait before booking! 2. No discounts for children who don’t drink. 3. Having asked for dietary preferences, there was too little vegetarian food. The staff did their best, but clearly they hadn’t planned for enough given that carnivores also eat the vegetarian fare. That food was good though, just that there was far too little if you didn’t eat meat. 4. The location is perfect to observe the start of the race as it’s just after the starting line and there is a nice terrace overlooking the Thames. But you need to watch the rest if the race in TV. They had two TVs for this purpose but one kept losing connection during critical race times! 5. No merchandise or souvenirs on sale. Goody bags were not branded to event but merchant advertising. Note that due to road closures at this time better to use public transportation or get an Uber which can drop you a two minute walk from the club down Spring Passage.
Superb location with views of the Thames from Putney Bridge to Hammersmith Bridge. Classy, historic rooms with well stocked bar and friendly staff.
LRC was the perfect venue for our wedding! Annabel and her team went above and beyond to make sure our vision became a reality. She was incredibly responsive throughout the planning process, and on the day of the event, her team was on point, making sure everything ran smoothly. The venue itself is stunning, and we were lucky enough to take advantage of the beautiful weather. We couldn’t have asked for a better place or team to make our day so special. Highly recommend LRC for any event!
We recently hired the London Rowing Club to hold our company's Sales Conference for up to 40 attendees although there is plenty of space to hold more people!. The venue is full of charm & filled with historic rowing memorabilia. The Long Room is bright & airy with a balcony that overlooks the Thames & Putney bridge. The venue also has a traditional Members Room which was perfect for our breakout sessions. From planning to execution, Annabel & the team were professional, helpful & attentive . The food was delicious and I can especially recommend the mini scones! Thank you!
I've photographed a couple of weddings at London Rowing Club and I've really enjoyed them. The location on The Thames is great and the indoor dining/ dancing area is really well lit and nicely decorated. The team are really friendly and I can't wait to go back! Olly Olly Knight Photography
The London Rowing Club embodies the welcoming spirit of Rowers. And does so since 1856. Great facilities, boathouse and boats. Most importantly: a wide Crew of Rowers who share foundation values such teamwork, loyalty, integrity. It felt great to join the LRC to continue to row when in London!
Amazing night. Really good service and wonderful meal
We had our wedding here in July, and it could not have been more perfect! The building is gorgeous and the staff are fantastic big thanks to Annabel, Suzanne and the rest of the team!. An amazing place to make amazing memories.
Held a wedding reception here once. Wrote a negative review and was threatened with legal action which wasn’t particularly nice so had to remove it. Would have been better if they’d listened and taken on board my comments.
