The Culture of Deviance in Academia: My First-Hand Experience at LMU - A Deeply Disappointing Experience at LMU: Inconsistency, Bias, and Lack of AccountabilitynnDeeply Disappointed by Inconsistency, Unprofessionalism, and Lack of Fairness.nnI am extremely disappointed with my recent experience at London Metropolitan University LMU. What should have been a straightforward academic process turned into one of the most discouraging experiences I’ve had as a student.nnMy assignment was marked late even though it was submitted just 17 seconds past the deadline. Across the faculty, submission grace times are inconsistent — some lecturers allow a 5-minute window, others up to 15 minutes, while in my case, there was no tolerance at all. Such inconsistency undermines fairness, equality, and student confidence. A student should not be penalised for seconds when others are given several minutes.nnWhen I contacted the Student Zone, their response was dismissive: “If your tutor decides that they will not accept the work, they do not need to.” This kind of reply shows a serious lack of accountability and compassion. Policies should be applied uniformly across all modules and lecturers to ensure equal treatment for all students.nnI also shared constructive feedback with my lecturer, on 10 June 2025. I was polite and professional in my message, but after that, I noticed a clear change in attitude during the final two classes, raising concerns that my feedback may have influenced her treatment of my work. Attendance in this module had dropped drastically — sometimes down to only four students — with many commenting that “she just reads off the slides.” This points to deeper issues in teaching engagement and student motivation.nnWhat made matters worse was that my follow-up email about the submission issue received no response or acknowledgment, which I found unprofessional and dismissive. I only received communication after escalating the matter to another staff member, Davinder, which should not have been necessary.nnWhile I understand that this particular grade does not count towards my final classification, it still appears on my transcript. Therefore, I expect fair and accurate feedback that reflects my academic work — not personal bias or retaliation for providing honest feedback.nnThis experience has left me feeling disturbed, uncomfortable, and unsafe about raising any future concerns. I’ve even considered transferring to another university, but the process is overwhelming and would disrupt my studies. I am genuinely grateful to lecturer that accepted me for the opportunities I’ve had here, but students deserve an environment where they feel safe and supported to express their perspectives and feedback constructively.nnGiven these experiences, I should do my resubmission on “The Culture of Deviance in Academia: An Examination of Power, Ethics, and Institutional Responsibility,” using LMU as a case study. It feels only right to turn this lived experience into academic reflection because what I’ve witnessed raises serious questions about ethics, fairness, and accountability within the institution itself.nnMy advice to new students considering LMU: after reading my experience above, ask yourself whether this university truly aligns with what you expect from a supportive and fair academic environment. I strongly recommend that both home and international students explore other universities before making a final decision. I say this as a home student who genuinely wanted to succeed here but was left deeply disappointed by the lack of consistency, professionalism, and accountability.
I am very disappointed with the administration at London Metropolitan University. It has been six months since I completed my studies, and I still have NOT received my certificate. I have emailed many times, but the response I keep getting is, “We don’t know.”nnThis is extremely frustrating and unprofessional. Even after providing my Student ID: 22023268, no one has given me any clear update or taken responsibility for the delay.nnI expected much better support from the university, especially after graduation. I hope they improve their communication and resolve issues more efficiently.
I recently visited London Metropolitan University with friends, hoping to immerse ourselves in the academic atmosphere. As graduates from a more open and welcoming Australian university, we’ve always believed that a true academic institution should be a space that invites curiosity and cultivates inspiration.nnUnfortunately, our experience fell short of that ideal. The front desk staff was notably unwelcoming—cold, curt, and seemingly disinterested in offering even the most basic courtesy. It was hard to believe such a person was chosen to represent a university to the public. Visitors were required to go through layered authentication and formal procedures just to enter, which created an unnecessarily closed and detached feeling.nnPerhaps this is due to institutional policy or cultural norms. Still, I genuinely hope the university can show more warmth and openness to guests who approach with a love of learning.nBecause education should not begin with a locked door—or a cold stare.
While I am not explicitly claiming racial or discriminatory bias, I do believe there is a serious lack of academic fairness, support, and transparency. Mr. Steven Curtis, Mr. Thomas Edwards, and Professor Mark Wheeler have consistently failed to demonstrate constructive academic or social engagement with me as a student — in fact, they have shown quite the opposite. I believe they lack both academic and social judgment, and I consider their influence on my academic journey to be detrimental. This lack of support has resulted in a deeply discouraging experience for me at this university.
I often think about how this institution appears from the outside – polished, respectable, and full of promise – yet when you experience its reality, it feels disappointingly shallow. It reminds me of Easter chocolate eggs: shiny and beautiful on the outside, but hollow within. Sadly, that is how most of the people who work here make the institution appear — lacking depth, sincerity, and genuine care for the individuals they are meant to support.nnMany of those in positions of responsibility seem more concerned with protecting the institution’s image than with upholding its values of fairness, integrity, and respect. What should have been a place of growth and justice has instead revealed a culture where procedure replaces compassion and appearances outweigh truth.
