Story

Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) is one of the UK’s longest established operational Airports having been officially opened on 1st July 1933.

LJLA is situated seven miles South East of Liverpool City Centre and adjacent to the River Mersey.

In June 2010, Vantage Airport Group (formerly Vancouver Airport Services) acquired a 65 percent majority share of LJLA from The Peel Group. The Peel Group retained a 35 percent share. The Peel Group had acquired a 76 percent majority shareholding in 1997 from British Aerospace and the remaining 24 percent shareholding in May 2001.

In April 2014, the Peel Group once again became the sole owner of LJLA. During the four years of Vantage ownership significant improvements were made to the Airport and it now provides a best in class airport experience for both passengers and airlines.

Peel believes that by investing in LJLA, the business can be taken to the next level, attracting new airlines and new services by capitalising on the excellent operational and commercial performance.

LJLA is one of the UK’s busiest airports and handled over 4.2 million passengers in 2013. Passenger numbers have increased almost ten-fold since the mid-1990′s, with the Airport moving from 20th to the 12th busiest airport in the UK with flights to approximately 60 destinations in the UK and across Europe.

The Airport has been at the forefront of low cost air travel since the mid 1990′s, when this growth sector of the airline industry started to develop. Airlines at JLA include two of Europe’s largest low cost airlines, easyJet and Ryanair, both of whom have large bases at JLA, offering a comprehensive network of point to point services. More recently, Wizz Air, the largest low-cost, low-fare airline in Central and Eastern Europe have developed their business from Liverpool and recently signed a further five year agreement, whilst FlyBe operate a popular service to the Isle of Man.

Significant investments in recent years include £130 million in a range of infrastructure works including a new and subsequently expanded terminal building, air traffic control centre, hangars, apron extensions, runway refurbishing and upgrading, multi-storey car park and on site hotel. Many of these projects also received support through the European Objective One programme and other regional funding. The new terminal was opened by Her Majesty the Queen in 2002.
A £12 million development programme has recently been completed providing a new larger passenger security screening area and an expanded departure lounge, including the addition of a number of new and exciting retailers.

This on-going investment in Airport facilities to provide an efficient operation and high levels of customer service has helped to firmly establish the Airport not only as a gateway to the North West but also as one of the primary airports in the UK. The Airport is now one of Merseyside’s major employers, attracting inward investment and bringing significant tourism benefits, helping to boost North West England’s economy.

In recent years, the importance and success of the Airport has been recognised both locally and within the travel industry, including receiving the accolade ‘UK Airport of the Year’ in 2007 from one of the industry’s leading trade media.

Liverpool was the UK’s first airport to be named after an individual when it was rebranded in 2001 as a lasting tribute to the Liverpool born, former Beatle, John Lennon.

I found traveling to/from Liverpool John Lennon Airport to be a breeze AND it has Greggs, isn't a huge airport, is easy to find your way around, and has very reasonable priced duty free spirits when heading through departures. Will I use again? Definitely.
Always a great airport to fly from, hassle free and never any hiccups. Parking is not a problem, there is a handy pick up and drop off adjacent to the terminal. Always quick work baggage drop and security. Then sit back and relax with the navy options available for for and refreshments. Great staff, friendly airport.
Brilliant international airport in the south of Liverpool with a constantly-growing list of destinations. Just recently they’ve added a huge new Jet2 roster to the airport with over 25 destinations and direct flights to Iceland, Egypt and Tunisia to add to their African list of flights. The airport is becoming busier every day, which is great to see. Fastest growing airport in the country. If you live in the North West, you should pick Liverpool Airport as your airport of choice any day. Modern, spacious airport with a large amount of shops, restaurants and other amenities. Getting through the entire airport from start drop off/parking to finish the plane is really easy and quick even when it’s busy it doesn’t take too long since the staff are well trained and very efficient and helpful. If you’re travelling by train, Liverpool South Parkway is about 10 minutes away on the bus depending on traffic and has trains running into and around the city, both on National Rail and Merseyrail, as well as trains to further away places like Birmingham, Manchester, Chester and the East Midlands. Everyone should fly from this airport if they get the chance and the more people that fly from it the better, as it will continue to get bigger, better and more competitive. And add even more flights and so on.
Had a great experience at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, it was wonderful. Drop off is right opposite the main entrance, check in was really quick and efficient. Security and Passport Control was the same, all the staff were really friendly and very helpful. As a passenger who books Assistance due to mobility problems, I felt like I wasn't a nuisance in any way. Flight took off on time. Return journey was just as good. It's a 10 out of 10 from me
Right in town, so a small airport with a limited number of destinations. No train station is really close, but you can walk out of arrivals and get a bus to the city centre, train stations, and other destinations.. You can also use a cab hailing app
Amazing little airport, reason it’s a 4 star is the fact you’ve got to pay a quid per bag, but at the end of the day the service you get from the Liverpool staff are worth the pound, security hassle free easy to navigate
I recently flew through Liverpool John Lennon Airport and had a fantastic experience overall. The airport is well-organized, with friendly staff and efficient facilities. The tribute to John Lennon adds a unique touch to the atmosphere. Although there can be queues at times during check-in and security, the staff work hard to keep things moving smoothly. Overall, a great airport experience with convenient access to Liverpool and beyond.
Our preferred airport by a mile, if only it served more destinations!!! Small and no nonsense from departures to the return home, baggage reclaim etc
An easy small airport to travel from. The elusive water fountain to refill bottles is around a corner - follow signs for gates 15-17, turn the corner to the right after the loos and it is there next to the lift in front of you. There supposedly is another down the other end past Starbucks but I can never find it.
Great airport. The officers are quick to work. Everything is intuitive and good. The only downside I noticed is that there are no trains to the airport.
