Thoroughly disappointed with tonights meal…korma was curdled, tasteless and had rubbery, previously frozen prawns used, the rice was running with water as though it had been flash reheated and not drained properly afterwards, as an army chef with years of catering experience this is totally unacceptable
From my experience you’re better collecting a curry from these guys yourself. Normally fantastic but when delivered the standard on this occasion was terrible. Chips were cold and soggy in a bag soaked in grease. Poppadom tasted stale and old and was also soaked in grease, it was in fact inedible. The onion and pepper in our curry was uncooked and had barely any meat content. The amount of oil that had spilled out over the containers was also surprising. The delivery driver was also too lazy to get out of the car and look for our house herself. After spending two minutes on the phone guiding her to our house she then sat in the car park for another few minutes in the car before delivering our food. All in all a bad experience from somewhere we would normally enjoy.
This used to be our favourite restaurant in Winchester, but have not been since about 2019. Perhaps a one-off, but not sure we want to return after last night. We booked ahead. It wasn't busy and they didnt appear to be under staffed. We were sat down pretty quickly and given menus and asked if we wanted poppadoms, which came reasonably quickly, but then we were just left there to finish our poppadoms until eventually we were also offered drinks. When someone finally showed up he said "are you ready to order?" We said "yes" and he walked off to deal with another table. Then eventually came back and said someone else would be along to take our order. When someone else did show up whilst previous guy appeared to be standing around not doing much we'd finished our drinks and poppadoms and had had enough, it had been about 40 mins by this point. So we asked if we could settle up and were instantly bought pink post it note with the cost written on it, slapped on the table and walked off again whilst I'm sat there holding my card. £14.50 for a small coke, pint of lager and 4 poppadoms! So I went to the counter to pay instead and they reacted like they couldn't care less that we were leaving, no questions, no apologies, no thanks or goodbye. Very odd, very rude, customer service. We went to tanoshi instead, where on walking in, unannounced to an obviously busy restaurant, were treated like welcome guests.
Visited on 21/1/23 booked a table via phone call, happily helped. Greated warmly, efficient and friendly service. Even happy to accommodate my taste for something very spicey. Completely blown away with the quality and flavour of our food, to the point of asking for the chef to shake his hand with thanks at the kitchen door while saying thanks to the other staff. Outstanding food guys, top notch food. Thank you once again.
Phenomenal food, and a beautiful atmosphere. We were given excellent suggestions for food and drink, and devoured the lot of it. It was a truly enjoyable evening, and I would not want to go anywhere else in Winchester.
We have been eating at Light of Bengal regularly for eight years, and it has never disappointed. In a city that prides itself on the range and quality of its restaurants, this is by far our favourite establishment in town, bar none. The food is equalled by the staff, who are generous, warm, witty and deeply committed to their work. Most of the staff have been there over all of the years we have patronised the restaurant, and the consistently high quality food is testament to their dedication. Light of Bengal remains a true treat and treasure in Winchester.
Deliver on Monday might turn up by Tuesday. I don’t know what’s happened but this place has gone down hill fast, after 6 years using this restaurant it will be my last. Promise the world and deliver cold over priced food. Never again!!!!!!!!!
A great little place for Indian food in Winchester. Great variety on the menu, efficient service and authentic taste. The regular Indian fair is pretty authentic. You must try their specialties though. Prawn poori is a delicate dish of prawns in a tomato gravy served on a poori, balanced very well for the palette. The meat samosas are good too. In the mains, you must try their Balti dishes, available in your choice of chicken, lamb or prawn. The house special is chicken and lamb balti which we loved. You must also try the Dhansak dishes. It was one of the best we have had in a restaurant! Dhansak is a Parsi traditional dish where the meat is cooked with lentils and vegetables. Traditionally it's mutton dish, but you can get chicken or prawn Dhansak here as well. All in all, a must visit Indian restaurant in Winchester!!
Have been eating there for about 20 years but was disappointed this time. Seemed very expensive and quality not as good as before, maybe new owners?
My first time trying a curry from here, and the service from the guys when I collected was great, they were really attentive. Then I got home & found glass in my curry, I’d bitten into it too which luckily didn’t end worse, I then called them and said I’d found glass and requested a refund He said there was no chance I’d found it in his food because they don’t have any glass lying around, I said I had found it in the food and again requested a refund, he just kept saying there was no chance it came from them Really disappointing and won’t be trying again.
