I am at a loss to understand why this store (and Lidl in general) gets so many good reviews. My impression of the Shirley store is that it is dirty (often, the floors are filthy) and strewn with rubbish (mostly cast off packing materials). At times, parts of the store look like they've been hit by a whirlwind. The store also often seems to smell of rotten soft cheese. Indeed, nearly all Lidl (and Aldi!) stores both here and abroad seem to smell like this! Why? The store is often out of stock of basic items like milk and eggs. Indeed, they don't seem to able to maintain a good, reliable stock of popular items, which seems to be business suicide to me. There is no customer service desk, as found in most other supermarkets. You are simply left to approach busy store staff (who are doing their best) or hold other poor shoppers up at the tills. I think the worst problem (among many) is that a few months ago a set of self-service checkouts were installed and this was apparently used as an excuse to reduce the already-understaffed manned checkouts. Even months after their installation these new tills are bug-ridden (I mean they have software issues) and unreliable, especially in the programming of the weight of particular store items. As an example, I was checking out a couple of days ago and the poor woman next to me, having had multiple issues with her attempts to scan and pay for her shopping, just gave up and walked out! The one good thing I can say about Lidl Shirley is that the store staff are all great, patient, good-humoured (they need to be, under the circumstances!) and helpful. For example, the poor man who seems to look after the automatic tills most evenings has a Zen-like calmness about him and has a way of soothing frustrated shoppers who have just reached the point where they want to smash the b***dy tills in! I think the problems are purely down to stupid decisions taken by upper management and, in my opinion, someone from Lidl Germany needs to get over here pronto and give the place a jolly good shakedown - how can a branch of an otherwise apparently well-run, well-resourced German company have been allowed to degenerate into such a state?! Myself, I have given up on Lidl Shirley for most things and gone back to using a very well known store (with a long name that begins with an 'S' and ends in 's' just 5 minutes' walk further up Shirley. Nowadays the prices are barely different, the store is clean and well-stocked and there is proper customer service.

Good selection and great prices, cannot wait for the new, bigger store to open in Shirley later on this year :-)

Very messy! Like chaos on the shelves. Stuff spilled everywhere. Friday night, super busy, one person on the till and self checkout not working. Really? Had to wait forever and a day. Not going back.
