Leeds Cathedral

Story

Leeds Cathedral, formally the Cathedral Church of St Anne, commonly known as Saint Anne's Cathedral, is the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Leeds, and is the seat of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Leeds. It is in the city of Leeds, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom. The city of Leeds does not have a Church of England cathedral, because though it is in the Anglican Diocese of Leeds, that diocese's cathedrals are in Ripon, Wakefield and Bradford. The original cathedral was located in St Anne's Church in 1878, but that building was demolished around 1900. The current cathedral building on Cookridge Street was completed in 1904, and was restored in 2006. The reredos of the old cathedral's high altar was designed by Pugin in 1842 and moved to the lady chapel of the new cathedral. The cathedral is a Grade II* listed building.HistoryPrevious CathedralIn 1786, Lady Lane Chapel was built, the first post-reformation Catholic place of worship in the city. In 1838, it was replaced by St Anne's Church. At the time, there were only two places of Catholic worship in Leeds, St Patrick's Church (which was built in 1831) and St Anne's. The next church to be built in Leeds was Mount St Mary's Church in Richmond Hill.

Leeds Cathedral is a serene and beautiful spot in the city center. My partner and I visited recently, just before the evening mass. The atmosphere was incredibly peaceful and quiet, offering a nice respite from the bustling city outside. The architecture is really impressive, with its Gothic style and intricate details. It's clear that a lot of care goes into maintaining this historic place of worship We didn't want to disturb the congregation, so we quietly took our leave as the evening mass was about to begin. It was a bit disheartening to see that attendance was low. Places like this hold so much history and cultural significance, it would be wonderful to see more people engaging with them, religiously or not. Despite not being able to stay for the service, our brief visit was still meaningful. It's definitely worth stopping by if you're in Leeds and looking for a moment of tranquility or architectural appreciation.
A beautiful cathedral with wonderful architecture. Quite small compared to other cathedrals I've visited, but interesting none the less. Free to enter and even has a confessions box.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo

The earlier St Anne's Roman Catholic Church, built in 1838 on the corner of the Headrow and Cookridge Street was granted cathedral status in 1878 upon the creation of the Diocese of Leeds. The cathedral is small in size due to its restricted site. The cathedral has an aisled nave and chancel under a continuous roof with narrow transepts and chapels. There is a chapter house and presbytery. It is built of Weldon stone with Ketton stone details. The west front has a tall gable between large buttresses that end in Gothic turrets. The western face has a large ornate crucifix sculpture. The northern face has mock-Georgian elements to it, including leaded bay windows. The church has a small tower to the north west corner, from which the flag of the Vatican City is flown. The interior has a conventional layout, with rows of pews facing towards the altar, there are two rows of stone pillars set along each side. The ceiling has a barrelled shape, with only a faint apex. Very beautiful architecture and history, unfortunately we couldn't go inside as there was mass going on at that moment.
If any Cathedral geeks like myself want to give their senses a real treat you really need to make your way to Leeds . Leeds Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Anne , the Mother of Our Lady and will knock you sideways it really is that good . The foundation stone was laid in 1902 and is a masterpiece designed by architect J H Eastwood and his assistant . I am almost shocked to hear it is only grade 11 listed . The beautiful paintings of the stations of the cross are by Cesare Formille who also created the Statue of the Sacred Heart . The Pieta statue was created by Boulton of Cheltenham and is breathtaking . The Sanctuaries Reredos has Our Lady as its centrepiece surrounded by Yorkshire Saints including St Wilfrid . The Lady Chapel is a treat for you Pugin fans the Reredos here is designed by the man himself and again is beautiful . I was mesmerised while I was here i wouldn't kid you it truly is that good . In St Urbans Chapel there is a great modern painting from 1988 by Richard Lomas of the Diocesan Martyrs of the Reformation Period . My only regret about visiting this architectural masterpiece is that I took so long to get here . My pictures certainly do no do this wonderous sight justice
only see exterior. Closed.
An interesting building and quite a small cathedral compared to many others in the UK. The cathedral is surrounded by fascinating architecture and sculptures.
Beautiful cathedral. Went to the Sunday Mass and was impressed by the choir. Mass was held to an exceptional standard.Visited onWeekend
Great place to attend Mass... I can wholeheartedly attest to this from an Anglican on his journey into Catholicism.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
