Literally one corner wall standing defiant against the sky. Discovered three ruined abbeys during our autumn ‘wolds and fens outing’ when we stay at Woodhall Spa. As a Lincolnshire yellow belly I was really unaware we had such a long history of abbeys dating from the 11th century. Sadly, in this instance not really much remains of the abbey as stones and the like have been pillaged over the centuries to build local farms and houses. Enigmatic south transept still remains.
Not a lot remains of the Abbey. You can see some of the earth works under the long meadow grass. Parking is on a corner of a narrow country lane. So be careful not to block access. It's part of our history, so worth a visit, although not a lot of information available on the site.
It's amazing to think it's still standing when you see it up close. Part of the tower and still a bit of stone work showing where the windows where. Good information board on the entrance to the field and a walk to St Leonrds is nice.
Not much left but one of the Abbey’s built at the end of a waterway off the River Witham. Careful if it is wet as the small road has grey sludge stuff which cakes boots and legs. Walk on the grass if possible. Parking in small lay-by near front of access road.
Not much to see but the chapel is worth a look just make sure it is open.
Limited parking and close access is restricted through the usage of barbed wire.
