We were served by a young Asian lad with glasses at the till where unfortunately the card machine appeared to not be working. He kept repeatedly telling my friend to swipe her card against the reader, which they are not allowed to do in this store and as a business due to their policies. He then told her to put the card in, remove it and then enter the PIN multiple times WITHOUT the card in the machine. From working in retail, I’m fully aware of what happens when you use a card reader with no card in the machine. He was persistent that she MUST enter her PIN number WITHOUT the card in the machine or it would not work. We requested 6 times to try another till as we were not comfortable with this - this is not an acceptable request. He refused to move tills. Another member of staff then came over and told him he must not do that and we need to move tills, so reluctantly he did. We then paid successfully with the card in the reader but he seemed annoyed.
Staff seemed useless, all bar one different young lad afterwards who went out of his way to try and help us when we wanted to speak to a manager about the issue. However we waited 20 minutes to speak to a manger, who agreed this isn’t normal behaviour - but after having a £6,000 holiday booked on her card a week earlier from someone doing the same thing this was not a risk we were willing to take. Manager informed us he would be taken off the tills and watched closely.
