Had previously used a rubbish locksmiths who had ruined my front door and fitted a poor lock that failed and left me locked out of the flat. Locksmith valiantly tried to access the flat without damaging the lock, but when he could not, got me access and replaced the cheap and nasty lock with a quality one.

Seriously - if you're reading this and you need a locksmith, these are the guys to use. First a horror story of how bad it can be: I made the mistake of using the Yellow Pages to find a locksmith, and ended up with some very dodgy "lock driller" locksmiths who wanted hundreds. They also refused to leave once they told me their prices and I said no (the telephonist from India told me they would tell me a price when they arrived when I asked how much it was.). The guy who came out was nice enough but there are a lot of scammers for this type of thing. They know a person is vulnerable and wanting to get in to their home, so they can ramp up the charges. I was told originally the price was £100 plus £33 for every 15 minutes. Also it would probably take about 2 hours of work! Finally after they refused to leave, I agreed that I would only let them touch the lock once we'd agreed on a fee of £150. Compare that with this guy who took like 10 minutes to drill the lock (only after explaining he could pick it no problem since he was a professional) and that he would fit a lock for a decent set fee. I couldn't believe it after my previous experiences. Basic rule of thumb is that a professional will always be clear about charges and helpful. They'll also offer to preserve the lock and pick it if you want them to.
