The view was amazing on the top of the tower, on the first floor you could imagine Stephen Dedalus and Buck Mulligan breakfast and on the ground floor you would find some James Joyce's belongings. The guides are very friendly. The entrance is free and the best way to get here is to take the DART from Dublin and get off at Sandycove station 30 min and walk another 15 min.
Beautiful place and friendly and dedicated people who do not want Joyce to be forgotten. We got a free tour through the tower and were provided with a lot of interesting fun facts about Joyce and his life. Thank you for being so welcoming and friendly and taking pictures of my family and me on top of the tower!! Beautiful view.
Completely a fun surprise! Our free visit included a wonderful tour guide who took us to all of the rooms and turret and explained every detail!
Take a pleasant walk along the coast path from Dun Laoghaire and be rewarded with this tribute to James Joyce. Great little museum, free to enter and the staff are exceptionally helpful and knowledgeable. The views from the top of the tower are superb.
Nice little museum free entry and there was a lovely tour guide who talked to us about James Joyce and Ulysses. Well worth a visit if your in the area.
The staff is really friendly and quite knowledgeable but you are welcome to your the tower on your own. The tower has two floors with a reception area with some displays and a small room at the back which leads you to a narrow flight of stairs onto the first floor. This room has some exhibits then you proceed upto the top floor which is the roof through another narrow flight of stairs. The roof offers a beautiful view of the Sea and allows you to take in the scenery in it's entirety. This is a short tour but the stairway is quite narrow.
It was interesting to enter this tower with really narrow spiral staircases. It is actually a museum where there were guides explaining the history and why Joyce had been there. What was the tower used for as a military defense. Very kind ladies who reminded me of the professors at the university of languages in Italy, of the volunteers with a great cultural background. Ah for those who were Italian and would like to know why it is called "Martello", it is not because there was an Italian but because with the pronunciation and time from "martella" pronounced in English it became "martello" but does not have the meaning of object that we know in Italy.
Free admission and unexpected surprise. Explore James Joyce life and his literary masterpiece "Ulises" thanks to James guide. Beautiful surroundings nearby and you could swimming in the beach. Pubs and restaurants close to the tower.
This place is a must see, not just for Joyce fans but for its historical importance and fantastic location. I find Martello towers to be really fascinating and the way the museum staff has organised the displays within the building is excellent. There are so many original manuscripts, letters and memorabilia including the first edition of Ulysses and Joyce's clothes and belongings. A climb up the narrow, winding stairs rewards you with stunning views over the Irish sea and Dublin. Staff members are very knowledgeable and welcoming. Highly recommended!
Absolutely marvellous experience ! We dropped by on a beautiful Sunday just an hour or so shy of closing time and we were welcomed warmly and received a free tour guide by the amazing John whose passion for James Joyce and his work shone through every word he spoke. Amongst stories and backgrounds about Joyce, Dubliners, Finnegan's Wake and, of course, Ulysses, John also gave us great tipps for exploration of the local area. We had a blast !
