A typical old style ironmongers, unfortunately this highlights the reason for the advancement of the likes of B&Q. The prices are shocking..I made the mistake of purchasing 3 command hooks at cost of £8.10 each. I was a little perplexed at the cost of a hook but paid anyway..just out of curiosity I checked the price for the same item at B&Q..£4.77. I realise that the smaller shop is somewhat penalised by not having the same buying power of the chain stores but come on..that's taking the mickey. You've had my pants down J Gliddon but you won't get another chance.

I have used this shop several times in the last 6 months, each time I have foolishly hoped my awful experience was a one-off, but each visit has left me increasingly stupefied by the awful customer service. Contrary to other reviews, I have found they often do not stock even very basic items, especially tools. The hardware shop looks so fantastic, like an Alladin's cave, a proper old-school hardware shop, but the reality is truly dreadful. I don't normally write reviews, especially negative ones, but in this case I feel compelled lest it help another poor soul avoid this depressing, incompetent place. One time I was in the hardware section and a gent was being served by an older man. I stood at the counter, waiting for the young girl to perhaps even notice me standing there, clearly requiring assistance. She continued looking at her nails and seemed oblivious to my presence until I coughed gently. Even then she just looked up at me blankly and offered not a word. When I asked her where the expanding foam was, she didn't know. "I think it's along this wall here" Looking at each product as I followed her. Finally the older man came along to help and even he wasn't sure where it was. They are always surly, uninterested and bordering on rude. No smiles. No knowledge. Hopeless. The agricultural section is even worse. At the service counter where parts and machinery are presented, they do not have a screwdriver. The chap started trying to undo cross head screws on my chainsaw carb, with a flat bladed terminal screwdriver that was too big anyway. I had to stop him saying "Please don't damage those screws". As he went to leave the shop to get a screwdriver, another really grumpy chap asked what he was doing, stopped him, said he didn't need to open it up (I was hoping they would so I could discuss diaphragm wear) and he could find it on the computer. They seem extremely reluctant to pass on any useful advice for helping you maintain your own equipment and would rather you let them do it for you, at exorbitant cost. They wanted to charge me to thread on a new mower starting cord. Avoid like the plague.

Gliddons is a prime example of an institution shop. They have everything and more that you need and want. The staff and service are superb, prepared to go that extra mile when needed (thanks Gliddons).
