PART 2… I was expecting one of those measly pots of over-thick processed garlic dip, surely they couldn’t dress this up as well…I thought…or could they…I’d barely started my rant on garlic dips when my momentary frown was reversed upward by my fantastic feast-providing friend. Smack bang in the middle of our table landed the biggest bottle of garlic sauce I had ever witnessed, if we could see over the thing we would have chuckled with delight but we simply couldn’t. We macerated till we could no longer. Four gentlemen had never eaten finer, larger, heartier, warmer food in their lives. The five boxes had been ticked, the four mouths fed. And from the bottom of our hearts we couldn’t have asked for a nicer experience, better price, better service, or yummier pizza. It’s pizza time, and it’s pizza time all the time at its pizza time. Five stars. Posted on behalf of my good friend, Ben Porteous-Butler.
PART 1: The clock struck 8pm; I awoke from my daydream, a self-induced trance I had set myself in to avoid facing the menu before me of overpriced pub food. Me and my friends found ourselves at a loss trying to find a nearby establishment to fill ourselves up with something good. We spent minutes and minutes deliberating and contemplating the region of Hendon’s choices of eatery. We discovered that we wanted wanted five things; quality, speed, value, great environment, great service. It was at this very point that time moved almost in an instant; as my left foot crossed my right, I found myself whimpering down Church Road on a hunt for a gut-busting feast. And fast. Three restaurants flashed before my eyes, four more, five, six. I was lost for choice. Then something happened that none of my comrades expected. Across the road, like a golden egg in a barn of duffs, I saw it; “it’s pizza time” whispered Joe. Joe was a good friend, always a voice of reason and always delivering news at the time you wanted to hear it. He made no hesitation in pointing out “itspizzatime”. Did he know something we didn’t? The rest of my group had no clue but, as we found ourselves launching like magnets to a metal pole, we thought we may soon find out. We were sat down. Window seat. The smell of quality crawling under our snouts. “TICK” shouted Marland. Marland was always looking towards our five markers of satisfaction as outlined earlier in this review. With quality down, there was price, and it was at this point Darius screamed down his arm pointing at the four back-lit menu graphics above our heads “LOOK”. “There is everything here” we all muttered. We were lost for words. And our pockets exploded with opportunity. We could feast tonight, none of us had seen prices so fair, not least in the city of London. After blissfully laughing over possibility after possibility, my esteemed colleagues made their choices. I patted down my suit and took to the stand. “Two fifteen inch pizzas, the spicy chicken and the pepperoni” I began, greeted at the counter by a smiling staff member who made us welcome before we’d even walked through the door. “anything else?” She smiled. She knew us better than we knew ourselves. “Two 1/4 pounders please, with cheese”, “burger sauce, mayo, and lettuce?” I nodded back. She knew us better than we knew ourselves. I continued, “four garlic bread, a portion of chips, four fizzy drinks”. Before I could gather my excitement for the order I just placed, for me and my three friends, she interrupted with words I never thought I’d hear after saying so much at a till point. “£36.50” she chuckled. I told her to repeat herself, I couldn’t believe my ears. She said it again. I said thank you, paid up, and hastily remembered the garlic dip. “Oh no, we couldn’t have dips could we?” She smiled, and said nothing. Our bodies had barely grazed our seats and the chef had brought us our two burgers. They were juicy, perfectly proportioned, and cushioned in the finest bread in Hendon. I couldn’t flesh together a sentence, I was in ecstasy. The waitress laughed as she asked if we wanted a knife to cut the two champions up and divide them. We all agreed this would be an idea and she brought us the largest chef’s knife we’d ever been trusted with. “Happy birthday” she laughed and we cut up these burgers quicker than a wild cat to a wilder-beast. Flash forward, moments after the better half of ten minutes chatting with my pals, the chef brought out the spicy chicken. He said nothing. Only laying out this ambivalent, spice-filled, exquisite disk of delight and sliding it across the timber surface. Before we could tuck in, a tray of garlic bread, a pepperoni bigger than the four of our heads put together, landed before us. There was only one thing left to surprise us. The sauce… See Joe Gutteridge’s review for part 2
