Hunan
"Founded in 1982, Hunan is famous for not having a menu. Diners don't choose, they just tell their dietary requirements, we then do the rest. The result is a unique menu, tailored towards your preference. We serve 12-20 courses, most of them are small, tapas sized dishes."

I was very excited to for my visit to Hunan as they idea of not choosing the dishes you would eat was very appealing to me. It was an interesting concept and the restaurant is in a really nice part of London so the walk there was very pleasant. It is an expensive restaurant so you expected a certain level of quality of service, and I can say that, for us, the service was exceptional. The food was also delicious and overall I had a wonderful time. However, for the restaurant price point, the presentation was lacking. Tattered menus and poorly presented dishes that you could find at much cheaper restaurants, that was not what I was expecting. The restaurant was established in 1982 and it honestly feels like it hasn't been updated since then. Presentation really would go a long way with this restaurant because the food is good. A little more care with the plating process and some new menus would make a world of difference here. If you have the money and you just want a relaxing evening of minimal decision making, excellent service, and good food, then Hunan is lovely. If there was an update on the presentation, I would definitely try it again. If you are looking to make a loved one feel special or you want to impress a client, there are better places in London, even if you want a more reserved and relaxed vibe.
What a gem! It is been on my list for years and I just regret that it took me so long to visit. The food is gorgeous, the place is cute, the spinach roll and the lamb were so good. Too many little good bites that makes you so full and thrilled for the next one, and for what it offers, it’s really great value for money. Make sure to show up hungry
We ate here with four people for dinner. The service was quick and attentive. The 18 course dinner menu came out in a timely manner and each was described to us. The food was all excellent but no dishes really blew you away.Food: 5/5
I enjoyed the no menu experience here! We came for Saturday lunch and it ended up being 11 starter style dishes some of my favourites were the prawn dumpling, deep fried cod, rib eye and venison, main seabass and peking duck - both nice and dessert fried banana and ice cream which was delicious. The service was also very good and friendly.
Came here for a special occasion meal. Looking at the positives, the restaurant is located in a nice area of London, the place was very clean and the environment was quite nice. The staff were extremely attentive and I feel like the service was excellent. However, the food was really quite average. Probably slightly better than average, but I find it really difficult to try and justify the prices that they charge. I Came here because of a friend recommendation, and after reading the reviews on here, however the food was really no different to any other Chinese restaurants I have been in Chinatown. There is a lot of variety of dishes, and we had a 12 course tasting menu, however, the portions are tiny, and none of the dishes particularly were stand out. £170 for lunch for 2 with 2 drinks is really a lot of money for what you get. Plus there is an optional service charge of 15%, which is automatically added to the bill. I was expecting more food from Hunan region, but ask someone who has lived in China, this really did not live up to my expectations. What did impress me was that the staff did really try to give great service and it did feel the service was better than most other Chinese restaurants. As an everyday restaurant, Hunan is a nice alternative to what is on offer generally in London, but I do not feel like it is the sort of place for a special occasion where the focus is on high-quality food.
2nd time visiting this year and it's a must do in London. Intimate space + culinary journey. Ever dish was carefully curated and did not disappoint. Come hungry!Food: 5/5
The tasting menu is a fabulous experience. I like it that I don't order anything off the menu and food arrives! Lots of stand out dishes in the 12 courses or so. Then you get mains! While good the mains aren't as stand out amazing as the tasting intros. Overall excellent quality.Food: 5/5
An interesting dining experience. 18 small plates of very well cooked mostly classic Chinese dishes that you would find in authentic Chinese restaurants. There is no menu so each dish was a pleasant surprise. The quality of the ingredients is apparent. Except for a couple of dishes like the fried beans and the mussels in black bean sauce you pretty much only get one or two mouthfuls of each dish. The concept is great if there are only a few of you and like variety. They were very good about substituting dishes to accommodate dietary requirements. A couple of dishes like the chicken and the main course of fried rice and steamed sea bass were only above average. The black cod in a reduced vinegar sauce was a highlight. Service was good.
It was my first time at Hunan Terrace, and we were warmly welcomed by the manager and owner. Our server, Andrii, took care of us throughout the evening. He was attentive, polite, and did an excellent job explaining the unique dishes and suggesting great drink pairings. I loved the concept of choosing from a meat, fish, vegetarian, or vegan menu, which allowed us to try a variety of high-quality dishes. The experience felt like a food tasting. Highly recommend and I will definitely be coming back!
16 starters, 1 main 1 dessert and about 3 hours. All the food was excellent and varied. We opted for the duck pancakes as the main. The dessert wasn’t too my liking but I think I’d feel that way about most Chinese deserts. Service was welcoming. Most of the courses come out more or less back to back. There was a whole we felt we were forgotten about but was made up for with an apology and complimentary glass of champagne. Would definitely recommend Hunan for a Chinese food experience!
