House of Fraser

Story

Kendals was the name mostly used by Mancunians of a department store in Manchester, England now operated as House of Fraser. The store had previously been known during its operation as Kendal Milne, Kendal, Milne & Co, Kendal, Milne & Faulkner, Harrods or Watts.HistoryThe store was opened as Watts' in 1832, and became Kendal, Milne & Faulkner when three employees bought out the business and re-opened it in 1836. The founder John Watts had begun a drapery business in Deansgate in 1796 which became prosperous and was later known as "The Bazaar" and expanded onto a site on the other side of Deansgate. The store building of 1836 (on the east side) was reconstructed after the street widening of 1873 by the architect E. J. Thompson. The site of the present store was occupied by the cabinet showrooms, workshops and packing departments. It was purchased by Harrods in 1919, and was called Harrods for a period in the 1920s, but the name swiftly reverted to Kendal Milne following protests from customers and staff. The Harrods group, along with Kendals, was taken over by House of Fraser in 1959. The store continued trading as Kendals until 2005, when, after extensive refurbishment, the store was renamed House of Fraser Manchester. Despite the re-branding of Kendals, the 'Kendal, Milne and Co' name is still clearly visible on marble fascias above the store's entrances. The store is located in a purpose-built Art Deco building on Deansgate, with 280000sqft of retail space, making it Manchester's second largest department store (the largest being Debenhams on Market Street) at 420000sqft. The present store was designed by Harrod's in house architect, Louis David Blanc, with input from a local architect J. S. Beaumont, in 1938 and completed in 1939. It operated for many years alongside the Victorian store building on the opposite side of Deansgate (opened in 1873). A large multi-storey car park stands to the west of the store.

Wow...so many choices of items and fashion. Good value too.
Nice shopping place but most of the staff are rude and want just to chat with each other and don't really care about helping customers
Store not busy, able to browse easily. Bought some Deisel black jeans on a good sale reduction. Well worth a visit as they have many further reductions
Ordered online and paid £9.99 for next day delivery. Driver didn’t turn up or update tracking. HOF are telling me to wait 5 working days as that’s what the courier are allowed. Why charge so much if you aren’t going to do it. No refund is being sorted for me. They won’t cancel the order. They won’t put me through to management. Nothing to help me out here. First and last time shopping with HOF
You get very good stuff with low price On sale, was on top floor on sale now!Home and furniture

Plenty to browse very quiet even on a weekend... Toilets are good to use and the cleaner of the toilet keeps them nice and is polite..... Cafe was ok some of the cakes looked very dry and staff are a bit dull not much atmosphere I get they can busy this time of year but it's very short conversation like trying to get blood from a stone
The best place for perfumes and makeup. Very friendly service, and there is always a sale on something there
Never had a single one of my average or negative reviews published on their website of the items. Become a shocking company since Mike Ashley took over
A great selection of products. Low rating because the service was horrendous. I came in at 5 40 to look for some shoes. I wandered around the shoe department for a while. No one offered any help or assistance to find any sizes. Workers were standing around together chatting. I kept looking around as I desperatly needed to get a pair of shoes for going away. At 5 55 a sales assistant finally approached me... however it wasn't to help, it was to tell me that they were closing at 6. I then asked for their assistance so that I could try on some shoes and the attitude that I got back made me feel like I was being a hassle. The only reason that I was asking for help so close to closing was because no one bothered to assist me earlier. Once they got the shoes out for me, I asked for them to confirm the pricing as they had a sale on and again it felt like I was being an absolute hassle. This was very unreasonable considering that I was there well before closing. I'm very disappointed in my visit.
