recently visited The Hillgrove Bistro and wanted to share my experience.nnThe staff were really friendly, and the service was pleasant, which made a good first impression. The atmosphere of the restaurant is also lovely, with nice views from the windows, giving it a relaxed and welcoming feel. Even the drinks were a highlight — I really enjoyed the Diet Coke, served in the classic glass bottles, which added a nice nostalgic touch.nnHowever, the food left a lot to be desired. It took quite a while for our order to arrive, and when it did, the menu felt very limited. I had rice with prawns, but the rice itself was clearly lacking in flavour. It seemed to have been artificially coloured yellow but had no spice or real taste — it just felt bland and underwhelming. For the price, it didn’t feel like great value, especially compared to other places in Monaghan where you can get more substantial, tasty meals. I’m not saying the food was frozen, but it didn’t feel fresh or well-prepared.nnOverall, while the Hillgrove has a nice atmosphere and friendly staff, the limited menu and underwhelming food mean I probably won’t be returning. There are other places in Monaghan that offer better food for similar prices.
Staff throughout the hotel were friendly and attentive. Leisure centre and gym have good facilities. Bar food is not of a high standard and very overpriced. There are some small touches that are missing and would have been appreciated- plastic bags for wet pool clothing in the Changing rooms, body lotion in the rooms, dressing gowns in the rooms €12 to rent one is ridiculous.
The receptionist that checked us in was clueless with regards to dinner in the bar and breakfast times. He told us that the bar accepted walk in customers and that the bar was not at all busy on Fri evening. Alas, the opposite was true and the bar was packed. We were catered for in a function room. The poor man also needs to be updated on breakfast times as his current time of 7am to 10am is incorrect.nThe indoor pool was quite cold considering the time of year too. It also took a while for the rooms heating to come on given the cold spell that we are currently experiencing. Finally there appeared to be no noise policy in operation as I was awoken three times by very loud guests at various hours of the early morning.nnOn the plus side the room was very spacious for a family of four and the bathroom facilities were top notch. The staff member who served us our food was very friendly, chatty and overall very nice. He definitely deserves a raise!!
We had our wedding at the Hillgrove Hotel on 12th September. What can I say in relation, there isn't enough positive adjectives in the dictionary for me to show our appreciation to all the staff at the Hillgrove. The made our special day all the more memorable.nnWe stayed the night before the wedding day and what I can say is from this point until the moment we checked out, everyone who attended and stayed were treated exceptionally by staff.nnSpecial thanks to Dean Coyne Wedding Coordinator for making our day turn out the best it possibly could. From the moment we booked up until the day he made everything so easy, with packages including a variety of suppliers he trusted, who all turned out to be incredible. A massive thank you Dean.nnIf you're currently planning your wedding day, I would 100% recommend giving Dean and the Hillgrove a visit!
I recently stayed at the hotel and here are my thoughts:nnThe Negatives:n- The bar area was absolutely filthy, it was busy yes, but I was sat down at a table that despite being wiped down still had chairs covered in crumbs etc, fair enough, easily wiped off.n- There was a fire alarm set off at around 9pm/9:30pm, the hotel did have a notification up in the lobby that there would be a test on Monday at 12:30pm but to ignore other ones fair enough: I did mention this the following morning and was basically told that a guest had set it off, there was nothing they could do etc. A basic apology would have been a nice start. Understand guests can, and will, do stupid things, but at least apologize for the disturbance.n- Kids & Teens run rampant through the halls as late as 10:30-11pm. Staff can't really do much other than request them not to do this I guess? Despite the noise etc.nnThe Positive:n- Bar staff very helpful and polite despite being under pressure.n- Food in the bar is absolutely fantastic.n- The hotel is very close to the nearby shopping centre.n- The hotel room family one was extremely spacious, with a decent sized fridge for storage.n- The breakfast buffet is very, very good.n- The swimming pool was lovely to use and the gym facilities are definitely better than the offerings from hotels I previously stayed at.n- Plenty of amenities for kids and a good selection of events on offer for the future.nnAll in all, more positive than negative, but the negative is something to be mindful of. I would still recommend a stay here.
