Had a Highlights Tour today, with Maurice as our guide. Extremely interesting, with a tour of the West Side of the cemetery and then we would explore the East. Handy map available at the ticket office, really friendly staff on hand. A hilly place but the pace of the tour was ideal for everyone - even my friend who has some mobility issues - with plenty of stops and places to stop and listen to our guide. Lots of benches and places to rest in the East side too. Coffee shop open for visitors and toilets also available on both sides of the cemetery. Highly recommend a visit to this place. Peaceful and with many beautiful and historical monuments of people. The tour is amazing as you learn so much! Thank you for having us!!
No longer a best kept secret. Nevertheless one of my favourite place in London. Either you like Victorian era, architecture… or just graveyards, this is an all year round experience to be enjoyed alone or in company. Abs if you’re lucky you might spot a ghost or two. Entry fee goes in support of such incredible historical place. The staff is so welcoming and friendly. At the entrance of the Egyptian side you can seat and enjoy a great coffee. Be prepared to get lost
Thank you Highgate Cemetery for an absolutely amazing day out! I've wanted to visit ever since I read 'Ink Black Heart' by Robert Galbraith, but little did I know that I'd leave with so much more! Firstly, highly recommend you do the guided tour! You learn so much about the history of the cemetery itself as well as its interesting occupants. Julia our guide was simply amazing!!! She was so knowledgeable, articulate, passionate and oh so funny! You really elevated the experience, so thank you very much! Money well spent! Spent 4 hours perusing both the West and East Cemeteries and the time just flew by I loved it so much!! The West is particularly spectacular boasting the Circle of Lebanon, the Terrace Catacombs, and Egyptian Avenue to name a few. It is such a tranquil, beautiful, gothic Victorian Cemetery. Don't forget to spend some time reading the gravestones to reveal their secrets, from interesting deaths, to the most opulent mausoleums! A MUST SEE!!
Feels weird to be reviewing the final resting place of over 50,000 people, but I can’t help but record such a pleasant morning tour of the West grounds. We booked the graveyard tour which gave us access to both the East and West graveyards. The tour was insightful, educational and humorous. Our tour guide Ben was professional, kept a good pace and easy to track and follow. He was also full of interesting knowledge concerning the history of the graveyard and some of the graves in which he identified for us. Genuinely - it was a great morning, spending about an hour and fifteen minutes learning about this important landmark of English history.
My friends and I visited on a wet Sunday and even this didn’t put a damper on such an interesting guided tour around the cemetery. The guild had such a way of describing what it was like to live in the Victorian era, about the graves and the people that rest there…. That I would recommend this tour so much that I’m going again next year but with different friends .
The cemetery is really beautiful place. Great for a walk if you like history and architecture. We bought tickets with tour I recommend to do that and our guide Stephen was phenomenal. He had such great stories and knowledge about the place. Was open for any questions that we had, he automatically knew we are from abroad and told us that if we need for him to speak slower we can just ask. We are completely in love with his way of doing the tour guide. We will come back for sure.
The price to visit the east side has now risen to £7 whereas to do both sides is now £10. I went for the £7 option as I wanted to visit the grave of Karl Marx. It's a pleasant cemetery especially if you refer to the guide as you go around. If you wish to see the grave of George Michael it is located on west side. I enjoyed the visit. If you start in Highgate village it's a walk downhill to the cemetery.
Great atmosphere in both sides. Many notable people buried there. The atmosphere in the west side is absolutely incredible, was definitely my favourite side however I thoroughly enjoyed walking around both. I didn't have a tour and still managed to look around both sides fully within a few hours. Cheap prices and unbelievably peaceful and interesting to walk around! Would definitely recommend!!
Highgate Cemetery, a historic London site, charges a £10 admission fee, supporting its preservation. Visitors are asked not to take photographs, respecting the cemetery's tranquil atmosphere. With its Victorian tombstones and rich history, it's a must-visit for those seeking a peaceful, reflective experience away from the city's hustle.
I’ve been meaning to come here for years. Glad I did. The £10 entry fee for both sites is worth it. It keeps the cemetery safe from undesirables and helps to maintain the grounds. Lots of famous people buried here. The free guide tells you where the main ones are.
