Great day out, wonderful grounds, with themed planting. Doggy friendly. Observatory next to the castle. Tasty cream teas, reasonably priced as well as a gift shop featuring the art students work again at reasonable prices. Under £10 entrance fee but bags of interest for the cost, including 300 year old walnut trees. Beautiful!
We visited the grounds on a beautiful spring day. You were still unable to go in to the castle when we went. There is plenty to look at and lots of walking to be had. The grounds and scenery are beautiful. We had our 2 boys with is and went with friends who had their young son with them so we visited the play area. To be honest there wasn't much at the play area for the kids but still plenty of room to run around. The cafe was nice and reasonably priced. We will go back when the castle tours are back up and running.
A great summer afternoon spent walking the grounds of the castle. Lots of photo opportunities and views. There's a small cafe on site that shuts at 16:30 selling a limited range of items, some indoor seating but much more outside.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Althought the inside of the castle wasn't open, we did have a look aound the beautiful grounds. You can walk through the inner courtyard to access the rear walled gardens, and then on past the maze to the folly. The cafe does really nice sandwiches, and the shop sells some quite nice arty things as well as pictures.
Reason for 4 stars is that the castle isn't open to viewing until further notice. It looks lovely and the grounds are vast and well kept. Hope to revisit when the castle reopens.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Beautiful grounds, very well balanced. There is small playground for kids and cosy coffee shop. Visited in the end of April. It was a very nice family day out.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Beatiful place to visit, small but very impressive. It's a must to visit in good weather to enjoy it to max. Cost £8/person which I find it quite cheap versus other s##tholes that charge double or more for derelict places. It could easely charge you £15-£20 if they wanted, as it's worth it every penny.
Beautiful if cold day. Lovely greeting and brief history on arrival walk through gardens and grounds which are vast. Lovely tea rooms for a well earned coffee and scone served by Pleasant young lady. Definitely worth a visitVisited onWeekendWait time1 hr+Reservation recommendedNot sure
Despite living in the area it's taken us 6 years to get round to visiting the castle. Well worth a half day visit though to enjoy the splendid gardens and tea room. Plenty of flower and shrub borders closer to the castle, with woodlands at the rear, including an orchid. Interesting sculptures some for sale are dotted about the estate. Students are in attendance more or less all year round and they were very well behaved when we were there. The Castle is currently being used as classrooms for students and as such you can't look inside. Although an extremely knowledgeable campus security guard told us tat there is a plan to organise internal tours at a later date. Very interesting to hear him talk about the history of the place and how Herstmonceux got its name. Plenty of seating areas to sit down and take in the peacefulness. The back of the Folly house is particularly worth a visit. Lucky enough to see a demonstration from a bird of pray chap who regularly uses the castle for displays.
Lovely castle and grounds we spent 3 hours here doing all the walks and trails gardens are well kept basic tea room with some cakes but nice only downer is you can't go inside the castle
