Our first time here for lunch and a catch up. The setting is peaceful and impressive. The rooms were well laid out, allowing space to work or chat. The coffee was excellent and the food freshly prepared. All in all, a memorable visit. We will go back.Rooms: 5/5
Do yourself a favor and visit this lovely cafe in library. The service is unmatched. The staff truly cares about your experience. The food is absolutely amazing the homemade bread is one of the best I ever tried. Lemon tart and Toffee sponge absolutely speechless. Highly recommend!
We were very disappointed with the food in the cafe today, it was quite poor for the price. Also don’t like the new modern furniture. The old furniture was much more in keeping with such a characterful building. The staff were helpful & friendly though.
Changes a bit from our last visit unfortunately not for the better. We used to be able to view our cakes before choosing. Was not impressed with the cake we ordered from the menu and the tables did not match the decor of the room. Beautiful room spoilt by cafeteria tables and chairs.
Upon arrival a very historic and dignified looking place externally. Unfortunately that's the best part - had pre-ordered Xmas Lunch & paid in advance. So, Food arrives, Roast beef, roast potatoes which are very very overcooked. Not asked about condiments - obviously I would have liked English mustard with my beef. Not once during the meal asked if everything was ok, in fact didn't see server again until food eaten or rather, partially eaten. Dessert also disappointing. Top price for a poor meal in little more than a cheap cafeteria. Do NOT recommend and definitely won't return.
Must visit for history and coffee shop was amazing too. Gluten free and vegan options available..
Stunning Library. Great little cafe. Welcoming staff.
Great place for quiet reflection a stay or visit the cafe with superb food friendly staff and of course history and books they also have events on that well worth checking out
Visited a week ago to experience the worst lunch that I can remember. The receptionist was most unwelcoming and the restaurant which was more like a cafeteria were unaware of our booking as reception had not informed them . Therefore we had to wait. The menu was geared to vegetarians with only 2 meat options i.e chicken Caesar salad and beef stew for which I am not paying “restaurant “ prices. There was one starter which was curried swede whoever has heard of that?. I can’t comment on the dessert but the coffee was Luke warm and tasteless. One star is overrating the experience
It’s getting a 3 star due to its mattress; I spent the weekend here and I am leaving with an aching back. No I do not suffer with back pains until now. The mattress is like a rock. The rest of the room is lovely. Otherwise great site, fabulous architecture , meals are okay and staffs receptive and friendly. Best come as a day guest unless you love rock-like mattress
