Excellent. I'm so pleased we made the effort to visit while we were in the area. First of all, yes that tiny lane you drive past is the driveway up to the small gravel car park that straddles the entrance driveway. And YES your car will get up there. You can park on the main road and walk up if you prefer. It's in a very odd situation, having had a residential estate built around it but once you get up the driveway it is a different world!nnA bargain price for entry with lots of history, rooms to explore, steps to go up and down, my kids loved it! Free for little ones by the way... A fiver each for adults.nnWhat a beautiful restoration has been completed and please visit if you're in the area. The ticket office is cute with drink options that are made from the kettle while you wait but I liked that charm personally! And some souvenir options too. Just watch your head on all the small stairs and doorways if you're tall like me.nnThere are toilets and picnic benches available and a second hand bookshop.
A fabulous Heritage open day vist! Very helpful and informative staff, fascinating Fort so beautifully kept. Well done to all involved- will return with the rest of the family as know they'll love it too
Went to visit the Fort Museum. Unfortunately, it was shut. Went on a Monday during school holidays. It's actually only open Thursday-Sunday.nSo we just had a wander round..nIt's a nice little sea town. Not many 'new housing' everything looks 'untouched' with places like an old prison lock up converted into home a home.nVery Victorian looking.. steeped in history.... if anything was open lol
What an amazing place to visit. The children loved it and so did the adults nSo many rooms to view with lots of things to look at and observe.
Well worth a visit to discover a whole host of history. Very sizable fort that has been restored over the past 50 years. Plenty of maritime history, WW1/2, Naplonlionc and local Harwich history. Staffed by very helpful local volunteers. £4 entry fee well worth it, if just for the view!
