My wife and I ordered fish and chips, at the prearranged time of 13.00 hrs today 30/11/22 When we returned home , 2 minute car ride, whilst unpacking the food, my wife noticed that the fish looked soggy. Nonetheless she dished the meal on a couple of warm plates, together with the chips and other accompaniments that we provided. When I looked at the fish it certainly was very soggy, I suspect that when the ‘chef’ placed the fish fillets into oil that hadn’t reach the required temperature. ….TERRIBLE The chip weren’t any better, dry, cold not at all digestible. We were both bitterly disappointed, for we used to eat regularly at Bennett’s when the old management ran it. As we were very unhappy, we once again got in the car and drove back to the shop. My wife handed the fish, and most of the chips back to the young female attendant, explaining what had occurred. The girl was very apologetic, and she stated that she had cooked the fish according to instructions, 7 minutes…!! She went on to say that she was prepared to cook the soggy fish again !! We didn’t have that, but had a full refund in stead. It’s a great shame that this shop has been allowed to go downhill, I note that the previous reviewer also had a similar experience as us. Bennett’s need to sort this out pretty quickly….
First visit and best cod and chips I've had from a chippy in many years. Also witnessed the lovely lady behind the counter pass a birthday card to a 93yr old regular that clearly made his day. Renews your faith in humanity, hope I'm a regular if and when I get to that age!Food: 5/5
We only live 5 mins away but when we sat down to eat, the chips were already going cold, so not pleasent to eat. The batter on the fish was thick and not cooked through, the outside was OK but inside it was like paste. A waste of £20, which is a lot for two fish, one chips and sauce. Most of it went in the bin. Wouldn't return.
THIS REVIEW WAS WRITTEN WHEN FISSSH TOOK OVER FROM RALPH AND BENNETTS. JUST 3/4/23 HAD FISH AND CHIPS FROM THE NEW BENNETTS. WONDERFUL Oh dear! oh dear! oh dear! Why did Ralph have to retire? The fish and chips we had the other evening from the new owners of Bennett was nothing like it used to be. Both the portions of cod we had were tail ends and, as a result, the flesh of the fish was very thin, so thin it was probably thinner than the batter - no thick and flaky cod here. On top of which, both portions were over cooked. I don 't know what Ralph did with his tail ends but not once, over the years, did I ever have one dished up to me - I suspect he threw them out. He certainly did not serve them up to his customers. The chips were better - but not a lot - smallish and somewhat dry and shrivelled I did phone the manager to express my views and, to be fair, she did offer to give me a refund but, stupidly perhaps, I did not take up her offer. This may be a sample of one and things might improve but I, for one, will not risk going back.
We used Bennett fish and chips today served buy Dave who cooked my fish fresh as I requested very friendly and polite food was 5star. Graham Parking: Easy parking out side the door
Really friendly staff and lovely fish and chips. Highly recommend.
Great Fish & Chips Glad I stopped! Cod was cooked perfectly, with lovely crispy batter. Chips were good as well. Cooked to order, so has to wait a bit which isn’t a problem for great tasting food. Loved the homemade tartare sauce.
Stacks of soggy chips, but it was the minuscule size of the three portions of supposedly large cod ordered which were also totally overcooked, that if we weren't starving would have headed straight for the bin. I did call to complain and was offered a free meal which was appreciated. However, it was the issue that these mean little bits of overcooked fish and soggy chips should never passed quality control. I won't be back but I wish you well but you so need to improve your quality control. This was the second time this has happened in the last three meals that we have recently had from Bennetts.
Gone so down hill since the new management! Very expensive and probably the worst fish and chips I've had. The other fishh restaurant is good so don't understand how this can be so much worse. The curry sauce was like a packet mix sauce and the fish was soggy , the sauce was slimy and very small portions of chips for the money.
Nearly a decade I’ve pass 4 fish and chip shops to come here, upon arrival I noticed things had changed… could not tell the difference between the medium cod or large cod, and average to poor quality at best. Skinny, off colour, not a single nice white flake in any of our 4 pieces of cod. And as for the pathetic pot of half a teaspoon if that of tartare sauce… never again. Just a shame new owners buy a good place and ruin it with inferior products…
