We've been meaning to visit this place for a while. So glad we finally made the trip. The lady on reception was so friendly and made us feel so welcome. We are English heritage members so we got free entry. There is a free audio guide which was great to use. Easy and really interesting to hear the stories of the abbey. It was relatively quiet here today so that was nice as you could take plenty of clear photos. The museum is also really interesting. Don't forget to visit the church opposite.
As English Heritage members it's free, but if you're not a member, £12.30 an adult seems pretty steep for what is here. Not a lot left of the buildings themselves, some arches and low walls, and that's about it. With that said the audio guide is very comprehensive, and there is lots of signage. Some very interesting artifacts in the museum and the lady at the front desk is very knowledgeable and friendly.
Great location, audio guide, very interesting museum and a must see small church across the road. A small site but well worth a visit. Made so much better by the English Heritage employee at the kiost, a young lady clearly passionate about her job. Well done.
Be aware that there's not any old Abbey building left to walk around, but what there is, is a charming series of cloister arches, in the middle of a beautiful and site, full of chestnut trees and picnic spots, an interesting small museum, a small shop and very friendly and informative staff. This is a fantastic little place, that is a super relaxing place to spend a half day with kids or dogs or parents. There is as much history as you want, if you want it, but it really is secondary to.being a lovely park.
Not a planned visit but we had our English Heritage membership cards with us which allowed us free entry here. We were certainly not disappointed and spent a happy hour wandering through the ruins. The lady at the entry hatch was wonderful. Informative and generally lovely and quite passionate about the location. Bought a guide book and Ice cream to wander around with, but there are far more things to buy from the shop such as Mead, books and artefact reproductions. There is parking a little bit down the road next to Hailes Church, which is where we went first. Built by the Earl of Cornwall in the 13th Century as a thanks to God for saving him in a shipwreck. Reputed to have had a ampule of the blood of Christ, which brought the pilgrims and much funding. This was found not to be a holy relic in the 16th century in a public denouncement. Not long after this, it fell under the suppression of monasteries under Henry VIIl Toilets on site next to the museum, and as open plan as there ruins are, wheelchair access is tight.
A very peaceful and interesting place to visit. There isn't a lot remaining of the actual Abbey but is still worth a walk round. There is a small museum here with some very interesting pieces on display. As usual the staff on site are friendly and helpful. If you like our heritage this place is well worth a visit.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
It is a nicely preserved, former Benedict Abbey, with its surrounding building ruins and an onsite English Heritage shop and be a museum.
We came in during the proper open hours but it was closed. We walked around and could see a little bit but couldn’t get to the ruins. The attached picture is all we could see.
Very interesting abbey ruin with lots of history. Great to wonder around and read the information boards. Picnic benches and seating available. 2 small museums, one indoor, the other outdoor. Don't forget to download the free audio guide available from the QR code on the first notice board.
The ruins of a once great abbey destroyed by Henry the 8th. There's one indoor musuem and one outdoor musuem. Quite easy to walk around the place and absorb all the history. Staff was very friendly and helped with the english heritage membership. Toilets were very clean
