From start to finish what a lovely experience. We was greeted by the very friendly manager Tom who made us feel very welcome. The open fire was roaring, such a lovely feeling when you enter. We ordered our food and pleased to say we did not wait long. Edit June 2024: called in again, with family and we all had a terrific lunch. Came with family as I'm over on holiday. Great pub. Great food. And very good service. Highly recommended.
The food was amazing, we couldn't fault it, portion sizes were generous. I was hoping to try something from their dessert menu but no room, after a starter of scallops and a main of beef cheek. Compliments to the chef !! The furniture though is tired which was the only thing that let our visit down. Just some chair covers would improve the rooms. Otherwise a fabulous visit .
Fantastic portions and great quality food! Grey Ox Inn is a very cosy and hidden away Pub/Restaurant. The atmosphere here was calm, relaxed Tue evening and felt very welcoming. There is a great Ox head mounted in the entrance and the decor is country style with exposed beams and tweed furnishings. Plenty of parking 30+ spaces The staff were attentive, although it seemed we changed waiters a few times. Gave enough time and were helpful to accommodate requests without issue. The cocktails pictured tasted great, no complaints to quality or taste. The mains we had sirloin steaks medium rare were a good portion and came with ample accompaniments.Hand cut chunky chips, onion rings, rocket salad with honey mustard dressing, mushroom & grilled tomato One of our steaks was a little too rare in the middle, but it was still good so felt it did not need returning. Blue cheese sauce was great. My partner loved it, i felt a dash of cornstarch to thicken it slightly would have completed it for me. The garlic butter sauce was great. The desert again was great, creme brûlée with a chocolate shortbread slice. No complaints here. Would return again, perfect for a Sunday or quiet mid week evening getaway meal.
I came today with my parents who are both fussy and my Mum can only eat small portions. The staff was very accommodating and made myself and Dad fish and chips and a small portion for Mum . The food was absolutely gorgeous thanks so much we will be back again soon xFood: 5/5
Gutted. Unfortunately it’s gone downhill massively since the takeover. Been coming here for years, the food has always been absolutely top drawer I’ve recommended it to numerous friends but it’s now just generic fodder - the roast dinner was average at best, bland veg, over cooked meat, terrible Yorkshire pudding, anaemic roasties. Desserts were dreadful - it’s all just very budget pub chain style food. Atmosphere still nice enough and staff are friendly but it was always all about the food and hate to say we’ll not be going back. I’d love to know where the old kitchen team have gone as I’d travel to eat their food again.
Visited on burger night 2 meals for £25 great quality, large portions and included a vegetarian option. Staff very friendly and happy to have a chat. Lovely cosy pub and do other deals eg pie night, details on Facebook. Thank you!Food: 5/5
Recently re opened never been before so thought we'd give it a try. Nicely decorated inside just be carefull when going to the toilet has floor very uneven .staff are very friendly. Not a large food menu but could be because they reopened but what we had was really hot tasty and good portions. We went early doors but we wasn't rushed and by the time we left the restaurant was really busy .need a bit of tlc outside but I'm sure by next summer it will be lovely to sit out side
New owners at the grey ox. Unfortunately it was disappointing, food very commercialised burgers and chips. Limited menu. It used to be a rare find restaurant with stunning dishes won't be coming again as the food is nothing unusual anymore. Staff friendly but the food isn't worth paying the money.Food: 3/5
Staff lovely but too busy to actually take any notice of requests regarding food or drink !!! I’m a gluten free diner which is always a nightmare going somewhere new, but I’m always encouraged by my husband to trust people with it to start with the wine was warm then the cider was served in a very small glass with very watery ice . Starter of arrancine was very nice which lulled me into a false sense of security because when my gluten free burger with chunky chips came and was actually a tiny meatball in a rock hard anemic bun with skinny fries with the most unappetising tiny bit of salad I’ve ever seen turned up I was very disappointed. It’s a shame because it’s a beautiful pub , cosy with lovely decor but I’m afraid it needs to improve hugely especially where gluten free is concerned. Also the gluten free fish and chips aren’t actually gluten free as they have Peroni in the batter !! Please be careful if you are coeliac or GF
