Previously I had given this church a one star review as I believed it's lead minister may have been the most spiritually abusive minister in Nottingham. The elders have now (wisely) removed him. Though I'm at a distance it looks like the church is one track to a healthy future and would commend it as potentially a good home church for anyone.

There is no shortage of passion and love for Jesus in Grace Church. Worship is responsibly administered, with contributions from the congregation being a part of the service in an orderly manner. Departures from this are faithfully managed by worship leaders, elders or mature members of the congregation, and so are vanishingly rare, and are minimal in their length and impact. You will always hear the gospel via contributions during a Grace Church worship service, regardless of any other parts of the meeting. The band is loud enough to be heard by everyone, but quiet enough that the congregation's singing is definitely not secondary. People are reasonably good at welcoming visitors in the main meeting, but where welcoming and pastoral care really shines is in the small groups. As these are lead by many people with different gifts and competencies, they are fairly different from one another, meaning that a lot of an individual's potential problems with under or over emphasis of certain issues, or their need of expertise in certain issues, can be solved by going to a more suitable small group. Unfortunately, the only way to find this out is through experience, but fortunately, God has a wonderful habit of pointing people to the right small group. The sermons are usually very evangelistic, making great use of rhetoric and illustrations to hammer home the points made, and as such are very engaging. Different speakers have different strengths and weaknesses, however a frequent weakness is a lack of specificity and the rare use of solid, expositional exegesis. [Edit] This is no longer a frequent weakness; the preachers are now much better at making their points from scripture. [end Edit] Sermons can tend towards the topical style, even when the sermon is ostensibly from a certain biblical passage. [Edit] This is now only very rarely the case; the typical Grace Church sermon now often starts from a bible passage and brings in other supporting scriptures, with vague lague of specificity only rarely being an issue. [end Edit] Regardless of the style, there are always good points well made to take home and meditate on. In small groups, you have the opportunity to discuss the sermon and apply it directly to your own life, and to the lives of others you know. This enables you to get something from every sermon, regardless of how applicable it is, on the surface, to you. If you particularly have issues with authority I would advise you steer clear of Grace Church. The leadership deals with dissent well if it is well articulated, but not very well if the articulation of dissent is harmful and unwise (as it can be when frustrations run high, and flawed people make bad decisions). The leaders have a high view of their responsibility to guard and protect their flock, and so their responses to adversarial dissent can be unhelpful for the dissenter. The right small group can minimise, but not eliminate, this issue. [Edit] The above issues with how the leadership deals with dissent have now been resolved and the leadership culture is gentler now. Becoming part of the Church is easy if you are up for actually becoming part of it; we don't cater particularly well to nominal Christians, but when a person wants to serve on a serving teams, get involved in one of many ministries, or faithfully attend and grow together in community with believers, they are quickly welcomed in. Truly helpful pastoral support does require engagement with small groups and willingness to take part in some of the pastoral help offered. If you don't want to be helped, unless God puts someone on your case, you won't be helped just by coming along and not participating. I have experienced God putting people on my case, so don't discount coming along if you just aren't sure what God wants you to be/do; it's quite possible you will find out. If you are particularly intellectual, finding a suitable small group is hugely important for your growth; you won't find a great deal of intellectual stimulation if you don't go and look for it.
