Gosford Forest Park

Story

Gosford Forest Park is located outside the Co. Armagh village of Markethill. Gosford Forest Park, previously Gosford Demesne, was acquired by the Department of Agriculture in 1958 and comprises some 240 hectares of diverse woodland and open parkland. Gosford Forest Park is also home to Gosford Castle. It was designated the first conservation forest in Northern Ireland in 1986.Facilities. Facilities available include: • Camping and Caravanning Site (with mains electricity) • Picnic and Barbecue areas • Tea House and Shop• Way-marked Trails• Horse-riding routes• Orienteering routes• Disabled facilities• Bookable Guided Tours• Special events (arranged by permit)• Function HallHistoryIn the early 17th century the Acheson family came to the Markethill area, and built a very substantial farmhouse near the present town of Markethill. The family came from Monmouthshire and, in fact, the present Earl of Weymes is related to the Achesons who later became the Earls of Gosford. When they came here first they brought with them 13 families, and some of the family names still survive in the area, notably Galbraith, Greer, etc. One of the two forts (or raths) in Gosford Forest was named after the Greer family who farmed the land in that area. The first dwelling place of the Achesons was burned down; this house was near the town of Markethill which the family were responsible for founding. In 1610 the family were granted the lands of the present estate. They proceeded to build another house using locally procured, hand-made, red brick. This house was named Clonkearney Manor after the townland in which it was built. The path to this site is up near the ponds, but unfortunately only a portion of the red brick foundations is now visible. This house was reputed to have been burned down during the Williamite wars in the mid-17th century.

Great forest park to visit. Modest entrance fee £5 a car July 2022. Several Adventure parks scattered across the Forest, including double zip wire. Forest Trails for walking and biking. Caravan/Camping Park. Good amenities and several food trailers adjacent to main carpark and toilets. Also there is a permanent large herd of reindeer. Great spot for all ages.
Beautiful walks here but didn't get to do them all! The trails are well marked and there were adventure play areas dotted around the forest in addition to the play park. Will definitely be back, hopefully for a longer period of time.
Great place for a nature walk / cycle / dog walk or bring the family for a picnic! Different trails to follow , something for everyone. Toilets and refreshments also now available in the main car park. I’ve included some photos of an activity park with a difference for children…not your typical park!
Smashing big forest Park, with tons to do and see. Bike trails, walks, adventure play ground, parks ,castle and beautiful trees. We stayed in the touring caravan park right in the middle of the park and it was brilliant for access to all the many trails. Deer park, horse ridding and endless scenery .lots of friendly staff and people enjoying the great outdoors. Excellent place for children and adults alike.
We stayed here for 5 days with our touring caravan, three kids and a dog. The kids loved the multiple parks, pump track and bike rides through the forest. Very safe environment and well maintained site. If you're bringing a caravan or tent you will find everything you need and it's all sparkling clean. Markethill town centre is a 2 minute drive away and has all the other essentials, hot food, groceries and more importantly an off-licence. This is without a doubt one of my favourite spots to visit and I will be back multiple times in the future.
Lovely place to camp for a weekend, walk, cycle and watch the deer and wildlife. Some food vans in the carpark and friendly, helpful staff. Good facilities for campsite users and very reasonable price.
A perfect pleace for all family. Lots of playground hidden in the forest. Beautiful bike trails. There is always deer on the meadow. Great camping spot with toilets, showers bbq benches and fire pits in the forest.
Has coffee, snacks and ice cream. A lovely park area with lots of walks and play facilities. I just wanted to highlight that there is a two places selling ice cream, drinks and snacks as these are not listed in the google profile
Amazing place, wonderful forest, a lot of different trails and all structure to enjoy a sunny day!
Great campsite. All you need. Very clean toilets and showers. Perfect for camping with children. Lots of playgrounds. Paths for walks in the woods. As you go, you discover new places to play for children.
