I think this is now under new management... Went there July 2017 and it wasn't so good. I think all the staff, including the chef have changed. On this visit,  I think the oil wasn't quite hot enough, which made for a less than perfect meal. Maybe just an off day; but haven't had the chance to return yet. But the batter recipe has changed and there is no home made tartare sauce. I'll update my rating when I have a chance to go again.  ...Previously.... Just been there with my wife and three kids; very very helpful staff and first rate fish and chips! Chips cooked to perfection, the batter on the fish very tasty; crunchy perfect.The tartar sauce was home-made and really raised the meal another notch. Five stars!

Great food good value and very friendly. Just posted a photo of the vegan friendly chips and gluten free battered Linda McCartney sausages . Very tasty. Vegan Chips are cooked separately.  Adrian.

Consistently good for more than fifty years the latest owners are as good as the predecessors. My mother went there when Mr Newman opened it after the war, we all went there for decades with the Goddards and after their OAP cod and chips today they ruled it as good as ever. Hugh and I once did a 7 hour round trip to buy our chips there, driving up from Cheltenham just for the Golden Chip. It's part of old Bury that is just as good as ever. Go there!
