Giant's Causeway & Bushmills Railway

Story

The Giant's Causeway and Bushmills Railway is a narrow gauge heritage railway operating between the Giant's Causeway and Bushmills on the coast of County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The line is two miles long.HistoryOriginal lineThe Giant's Causeway Tramway, operated by the Giant's Causeway, Portrush and Bush Valley Railway & Tramway Company Ltd, was a pioneering narrow gauge electric railway operating between Portrush and the Giant's Causeway. 9+1/4mi long, it was hailed at its opening as “the first long electric tramway in the world”. Promoted by W.A. Traill it was powered by hydroelectricity from an elevated third rail, although steam tram engines were also used in its earlier years, and the power supply was converted to overhead wire in 1899. It opened to Bushmills in 1883, the extension from there to the Causeway following on 1 July 1887. The line did not reopen after the end of the 1949 season on 20 September, and was subsequently dismantled.New lineThe new railway utilises equipment originally assembled by Lord O’Neill for a tourist line at Shane's Castle, Country Antrim, which closed in 1994. The idea of using this to revive part of the Tramway was largely conceived and promoted by David Laing. The Giant’s Causeway and Bushmills Railway Company is a not-for-profit organisation with charitable status. Clearance of the trackbed commenced at the end of 1999 and the railway carried its first passengers at Easter 2002.

On a lovely day this little railway is a great way to spend a few hours. Kids will love it. I enjoy watching the golfers try to make pressure putts with a train full of people watching!

The Giants Causeway visitor center is such a let down when compared to the wonderful Causeway itself. We went for a family day out and just wanted to look at the causeway. However to even park you must pay around £8 per person in the car. This can easily to circumnavigated by dropping everyone off before arriving at the car park and just having the driver go in. After taking the bus down to the Causeway and having a great time we arrived back to the car. Because you don't need to pay on the way in, with a little bit of barrier and cone movement you don't need to pay at all. The public toilets are also incredibly small for the number of visitors and there was always a line for the ladies toliets with some ladies opting to use the men's toliets rather then wait.
