Excellent food, served hot on hot plates. Ate dinner there with the other half. Slow cooked lamb shoulder was melt in your mouth delicious followed up by top quality treacle pud and creamy ice cream, all washed down with a very nice Rioja. A very picturesque location. Open fires. Highly recommended.

What a shame. Nice hotel, great location, surly and dismissive member of staff! We only stopped for two coffees. These were served with biscuits. Before I ate the biscuit I asked my wife if they were unusual cheese savoury biscuits (from the smell). I thought it odd to serve savouries with coffee but this may have been a local recipe (like savoury scones). The cheese flavour and smell was pervasive. My wife actually said the biscuit tasted like vomit. After some thought I decided to bring this to the attention of a staff member, rather than just walk away - these biscuits could well have been off and perhaps the hotel was unaware. Surely telling them would save anyone else being troubled? Unfortunately, the bar tender (a gentleman with distinctive blue/purple rimmed spectacles) took this with ill-humour. He firstly asked me how he could help. I said I wasn't sure, but asked if the coffee biscuits were meant to be savoury. He said they were supposed to be shortbread and "baked fresh that morning". I told him they smelled and tasted very strongly of cheese, and asked him to smell. He claimed the biscuit smelled fine, tasted a tiny bit and declared it also tasted fine! I was a bit surprised, and suggested that the cream or butter used had 'fermented' (I meant 'curdled' but this changes nothing). He said "no it hasn't" and turned away, therefore very rudely closing down the conversation. I replied that I was sure they were "off", to which he bluntly repeated "no sir, they're not" as he continued to walk away. I walked off, frankly a bit amazed that a hotel could offer such curt responses. This was after me declaring I wasn't after a refund or replacement! His manner was abrupt, rude and dismissive. In retrospect I wished I'd asked for a second opinion from other guests in the room, or from his line manager. Just adding 'sir' to the end of every abrupt sentence is not a replacement for good service. Now, don't get me wrong - anyone can have a bad day. But the reason wasn't that he was being taxed - at most 12 people were dotted about the place, this being the week after the local school holiday. What would be the correct and sensible response, even for someone with no sense of smell or taste? Easy - here's some customer service 101 for the George III Hotel: "I'm very sorry sir. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I will let the supplier/baker/manager know. Thanks again, I hope you have a nice day. Bye now.! That would have saved getting a snotty review.

We stayed at the annex, about 30m before the main building. The are about 12 rooms there, overlooking the estuary. We were in the ground floor which suited us, as our front door opened straight out to the estuary, and as we had our dog with us, that was perfect. The room was very large and the bathroom was a god size. The quality of the fittings was ok but what you pay for is the magnificent views. Would certainly come again.

Very disappointed in the food. Have visited George III many times previously and have had really excellent food, but sadly that is not the case now!!! All I can say to describe the food is expensive, microwaved meal. Awful. Will not be returning.
