Give yourself a long time to enjoy. Still an army base. Very peaceful. Brilliant views, very scenic. We spent 5 hours and ran out of time. Well worth while. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Good day out and you might see the porpoises Hamish.
Lovely monument near Inverness. It is a massive area with sea views. Some areas are not open to the public, as they are still used by the army. But you will get a map with an explanation of which areas can be visited. The place is also well known for dolphins watching. You have good change to see dolphins from there.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Fantastic historic place. Still an army barracks, but open to visitors. Army personnel and staff very friendly to visitors. Loads of combat memorabilia over the centuries. Fantastic views from the top of the walls. Well worth the admission charge!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
The grounds are massive with lots of grassy areas. There aren't many areas of the buildings that you are able to enter as these are active barracks, but it's the views and the spacious green spaces that I think make this place so beautiful. There are a few historic barrack rooms that you can see, a chapel, and a room that holds empty powder barrels and some historic items including guns. Apart from that there's a cafe and restaurant with a snooker & pool tables and a dart board. Me and the family had a lovely time there.
Lovely place for a visit, exposed to the elements so wrap up warm, good QR code which gives you an audio tour for free when you’re walking around. The displays are showing their age, haven’t changed much since I’ve visited before.
It was wet, cold, mild and at some points sunny. But mainly windy, however still very interesting and good views. It would be good if they had an audio guide. We were very pleased they had Mobility scooters to get around inside the grounds and a wheelchair from Fort to the car. It was just a shame the ramps to see the canons were not accessible but I guess it is an active barracks. The staff were friendly and very helpful. Highly suggest you wrap up warm even in mid-july.
Absolutely loved the history of the fort. The museum was super fascinating. The information and the items kept there are a must watch. History lovers definitely do this fort.Visited onWeekdayWait time1 hr+Reservation recommendedNo
Fantastic place to visit. The museum is awesome. You have to visit the cafe for the Fort George bacon sandwich. Lovely piece of Dundee cake as well. Well worth the £9.00 entry fee. Will visit again. All staff friendly, though I was amazed to be passing working military personnel and soldiers as it's still a working base which I hadn't realised.
Well worth a visit. Quite a bit of walking around and it's mostly outside. You can listen to the audio guide on your phone by scanning a QR code, so you might want to bring earphones. There is a small cafe which does a mean bacon roll and amazing carrot cake and hot chocolate!
We picked the wrong day to visit, the rain was coming down non-stop all day and we got soaked, however, we still managed to enjoy our day! There's lots to see and read at the fort as well as the stunning views to enjoy as you walk along the battlements. There's not many guides, you're really just taking yourself around, however, the guides we did meet were lovely. It's still a working military facility and we did meet a couple of soldiers who were good enough to stop for a chat. The history here is quite eye opening and if you give the place some time, you'll walk away a wiser person. There is an app you can use on your mobile phone to get a guided tour, it's really good and answered many of the questions I had. One things I'd recommend doing first though, visit Culloden and properly take it in before visiting Fort George, as the fort is really the next chapter in the story and it follows on nicely.
