Exeter's Underground Passages
"These medieval passages have always fascinated local people. There are stories of wars and sieges, plague and pestilence. They were designed to bring clean drinking water from natural springs outside the walled city. The water came through lead pipes into the heart of the city. The pipes sometimes leaked and repairs to buried pipes could only be carried out by digging them up as we do today. To avoid this disruption the passages were vaulted. It is down some of these vaulted passageways that visitors are guided.Exeter is the only city in the UK to have underground passages of this type. Guided tours have taken place here since the 1930s. Today the passages are lit throughout, but still fascinate for all who enter."

Never knew they existed so very pleased with the experience. Being a bit wary of small spaces posed a slight issue but was reassured I could get out if I needed to. And a great history lesson for all. The wait just meant we had time to look at the exhibits and for all to use the toilet.Visited onWeekendWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedYes
Don't take the "low" route back if you can't get lower than 3 feet comfortably. If happy crawling, go for it. Bit quick, and could have done with the tour being more leisurely. Knowledge and affability of guide was excellent. Well done Rachel!
Interesting place to visit but not for the claustrophobic. Try to be at the front or you won't hear much.Visited onWeekdayWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedYes
Under the streets of Exeter. Nice little tour of tunnels. Not for the claustrophobic. The tour was interesting and I learned a few things along the way. There is a section where you can crawl through some more tunnels but do not have too. The staff were friendly. Shame some low lifes caught stole the medieval piping.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes

So I back in Exeter for the first time in seven years. I was catching up with friends and doing some of the touristy things whilst I was in the city. I came here and booked onto the 13:00 tour on a Sunday. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. You receive a short talk prior to watching a short video cli that give you some history and the back story to the tunnels before going underground. The video clip is around 10 minute and the underground tour itself lasts for around 25 minutes. I advice wearing decent footwear and a hard hat is provided. There is approximately around 300 meters of tunnels. The tunnels date back to the medieval period and has seen war, death when cholera broke out within the city in 1832. The tunnels was blocked off due to war and then reopened years later. Parts of the tunnels were badly damaged during the Second World War due to the blitz that the city saw. It’s an amazing adventure for children and pretty interesting for anyone who loves history. Thanks to the guide ‘Helen’ who was fun, knowledgeable and made the experience fun a and really interesting.

Wonderful! Our guide Rachel was great, excellent with the kids, very knowledgeable, and made us feel safe in the passages. Which, by the way, they aren’t kidding, they’re very narrow and/or low, so if you’re even a little bit claustrophobic, don’t think you’ll be okay, because you won’t! That said, if you are okay in small spaces, they’re really fascinating history. The little museum bit was good too, and it was all very well organised, especially the video introduction and the bag lockers system. Great visit, well worth the money.
Is best to book in advance as groups are only 15 people at a time. The guide was informative & amusing. The passages were a bit claustrophobic.Visited onWeekendWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedYes
