Esarn Kheaw

About

Esarn Kheaw Thai Restaurant is the first North East style restaurant opened in London. Established since 1992, it is a family run business which keeps Thai food as traditional as they can.

Story

Once upon a time, a long time ago, Mr Puntar was living by the paddy fields in the Northeast of Thailand. (Ubon Ratchathani Province). Around 1968 Mr Puntar became a member of the "Bangkok Officer Open Mess" in the "Chao Phraya Hotel" in Bangkok. His position was an assistant cook where he learnt the basics of being a good chef. In 1974 he applied for work in England to work with the "Trust House Forte Hotel LTD".

By September 1974 he was able to come to England to work at the "Imperial Hotel" in Torquay, Devon. This was his first job abroad as a Chef. After two months, he transferred to work at the "Kensington Close Hotel" in central London as a sauce chef. During his time there he was able to work with different tools and learnt different skills. In 1977, he filled out an application to work at " Intercontinental Hotel", Park Lane. His application was accepted and this was where his career as a professional chef began. He started as a demi chef de party and after one year, he was promoted to a chef de party. Soon after, Mr and Mrs Puntar married and Mrs Puntar followed her husband to England to pursue his career as a professional chef. While in Thailand Mrs Puntar was a teacher and learnt all her cooking skills from her mother and sisters.

By July 1987, Mr Puntar received an "Outstanding Employee Award." Because of his hard work he was promoted to sus chef. This meant responsibility and teamwork. He worked at "Intercontinental Hotel" for sixteen years as a sus chef. Meanwhile, Mrs Puntar was the chef at home. She would often cook for friends and family hosting regular dinner parties. She was always complimented on her amazing food and hospitality.

In 1992, after many years of perseverance and patience, Mr and Mrs Puntar finally opened their very own restaurant which is known to you as "Esarn Kheaw".

In 1993, Mr Puntar resigned from "Intercontinental Hotel" to continue his responsibility within his family business. Mrs Puntar has taken the role of head chef at "Esarn Kheaw". Together they created all the recipes on our menu for you to enjoy, which reminds them of their childhood in Ubon, Thailand.

Expect to see a new generation of Puntar's continuing the family business to keep your bellies happy and our family recipes alive.

A very very sweet family-owned restaurant with delicious food at extremely reasonable prices! 10/10 would recommend to friends and family! They are pescatarian-friendly, and they have a few vegan options as well. We got the tofu Tom Yum, vegetable red curry, and more. I am very full.Food: 5/5
A solid four out of five on this occasion. Food is pretty good but service is a little on the slow side - then again it was peak 8pm on a Friday night. It took 20 minutes for our starters to arrive for example. I was disappointed with the crispy noodle and tofu starter. Very little tofu and mostly deep fried crispy noodles with a subtle dash of sweet and sour sauce. I enjoyed the Laab which was fragrant and spicy. The sea bass was tasty. Of all the dishes, the vegetable omelette side dish was my favourite! I will return to try something different.
The staff was incredibly friendly and everything we tried was really tasty! I especially liked the son in law eggs and the Penang chicken curry. And I loved their Thai ice tea. If you never tried it, I would highly recommend it. They have a version with milk, black or with lemon.Food: 5/5
The waitress was very kind and friendly explaining their specialties. However, the food didn’t turn out that special to us unfortunately… Ox tail was the only one we liked very much, its taste was extraordinary with that vinegar and home made chilli sauce but be mindful it’s quite spicy to normal people like us. The grilled sirloin steak was over cooked so I wouldn’t recommend it, son-in-low egg didn’t impress me and the ice tea with milk was also lower than expectations.
Definitely one of the best if not the best Thai restaurants in London I’ve had. We had the chicken satay and pad Thai and not a lot of places cook the chicken just right. Most restaurants overcooks the chicken and it becomes too dry, but this place nailed it with that and the flavour was so balanced. With the satay chicken the peanuts were just on point. Will come back if I’m in the neighbourhood again. Would love to try their sea bass dish next time as it looks amazing
My new favourite Thai restaurant in West London! They serve Northeastern dishes like bamboo shoot salad and Esarn style papaya salad. All so delicious. The price was reasonable too. Two guests without drinks was about £40. The owner was friendly and the servers were all helpful. The venue is not the most stylish but colourful. Booking is essential. I would definitely recommend the restaurant.
Like previous reviewers, my husband and I also came to this place as per Uncle Roger’s recommendation. We’ve eaten here twice. The verdict? Good, but can still improve. What we liked: -Grilled Prawns: smoky, flavourful and juicy with a tangy chilli vinegar sauce -Prawn Tom Yum: just the right amount of sourness and spiciness -Son in Law Eggs: tasty tamarind sauce -Thai iced tea with milk: refreshing and authentic What we didn’t like: -Tiger Beef: a bit overcooked and the sauce was very salty -Prawn Pad Thai: not bad but a bit too sweet -Chicken with Holy Basil and Chillies: sauce was a bit watery and the dish wasn’t spicy enough -Small serving size of every dish That being said, we enjoyed during both visits and we can definitely see ourselves coming back.
This is one of those "great finds" even though it already has a great reputation and rightly so. It offers fantastic food which leaves you feeling great as you walk away matched with reasonable prices and AMAZING service!! I honestly can't speak highly enough of the friendly, bubbly and knowledgeable host we had for the evening. Onto the food and it offered the depth and balance of flavours expecting from great Thai food. The "Son in law" eggs with the semi sweet Tamarind sauce & perfectly soft boiled eggs were a great pairing for the sticky rice. The texture of the crispy seabass was something this home "cook" can only dream of achieving it was spot on. To finish up we had the first Mango sticky rice of the year and considering I bought it on the recommendation as both me and my partner don't like mango or rice pudding dishes it blew me away. The slightly sweet and mellow taste of both the coconut milk infused rice and delicate mango paired so well it left me genuinely left me with a uplifting feeling. If your still reading this then I think you are aware I highly recommend a visit here.
Nice family run Thai restaurant serving Esarn/north Eastern Thai food. Although the service is pleasant and efficient, it can be a bit slow and the food is nice and a good choice if you are nearby but not really worth traveling across the city Food: 4/5
Esarn Kheaw is a family-run Thai restaurant that has been serving traditional Northeastern Thai cuisine in Shepherds Bush for over 30 years. The restaurant is small and cozy, with a warm and inviting atmosphere. The staff are friendly and attentive, and they are always happy to recommend dishes to their guests. The food is all made fresh to order, and the flavours are authentic and delicious. menu at Esarn Kheaw features a wide variety of Northeastern Thai dishes, including som tam spicy papaya salad, larb spicy minced meat salad, and khao soi curry noodle soup. We had stuffed wings and spring rolls for starter, which was perfect. For our main courses, we had fried rice and chicken thai curry, very flavoursome and penang curry with sticky rice, which was creamy and tasty. Overall, I had a great experience at Esarn Kheaw. The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was inviting. Tems is fab. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. Parking: Resident Permits along side roads, so best after 6.30pm
