We last minute decided to go for lunch at the Errigle as we hadn't eat there before. The menu is good, very typcial pub food. I had a chicken burger and my partner the chicken stack. Everything was delicious, good portion sizes and the service was good. Nice, warm atmosphere inside the bar.
Very disappointed and genuinely disgusted with how I was treated within this bar. We regularly would have ate in the restaurant and had drinks within the bar with family. A group of perhaps 16 of us were out celebrating my partners 30th birthday and one of the bar men noticed I had a southern accent. He proceeded to ask what part of Dublin I was from and told me his mother was from Dublin. The conversation was all okay nothing to be concerned about. However, I asked for a pint of water from the bar man he gave it to me, I sat back with my friends and after approx 30 minutes needed to use the toliet. When we got up to go to the toliet a bouncer rushed over and told me “I was not going anywhere until I drank my water”. Myself and my friends were a little shocked by their behaviour as I was not drunk, messy or causing any problems. I’d simply been sitting chatting to my friends. I sat back at the table and drank the water that I had asked for and was also drinking a pint of cider I had bought. I regularly drink water when I am in a pub because it is the sensible thing to do when drinking alcohol. Approximately 40 minutes passed and I had a tap on my shoulder and two bouncers said “You were told to not drink anymore alcohol, you need to leave”. Again, I was absolutely shocked, disgusted and angry because I’d done nothing wrong. Whilst this was happening the same bar man who had been asking where I was from etc. was watching as if it was amusement. I told the bouncers I was calling the police because I genuinely was mortified and felt as if I had been singled out and wondered was it for the fact I had a southern Dublin accent. Then proceeded to tell parties of our group I would have been allowed to stay if I hadn’t of reacted the way I did. Obviously I was very angry because an entire scene was made by approaching me whilst I sat at a table like every other person in the bar but, yet I was singled out and told to leave. Apparently, discrimination isn’t a policing matter, as after speaking to the police they said bar security can basically do what they like and it’s at their discretion who they allow in/out. However, I done nothing wrong except innocently ask for water but, of course I have a southern accent. I am not posting this to be nasty or mean. I am posting it because I am genuinely so disappointed with how I was treated and I didn’t think such discrimination was such an issue in this day and age. I live and work in Belfast for years and have never experienced this level of discrimination, in fact I’ve never in my life being removed from a bar. Safe to say we will never eat/ drink in this pub again. Very disappointed and sad too as apparently this bar is Irish owned. What a weird place Northern Ireland is.
Popular and warmly welcoming bar/restaurant at Ormeau - Belfast South. Tempting but still not pricey menu, friendly staff, well chilled Guinness and more craft samples on tap. Good live music on regular basis. Can be pretty busy during weekends so resevation is recommended.
Have eaten twice at the Errigle in last two weeks - both times vegetarian food- the nut roast is the best I have had, and the veggie burger was excellent. Atmosphere is great. This is going to be a regular
Nice night in the Errigle, clean, tidy, good drink, good service, the atmosphere was just a little bit down, but just could have been the time of the evening. Well worth a visit though.
