The legend himself joey dunlop brillaint memorial garden also his resting place is 5 mins out of the town, went myself and paid my respects to the greatest motherbike racer to have ever done it
We made the pilgrimage and it was a bit emotional as well as beautiful.nHats off to the people of Ballymoney for doing this.nOne thing we did find though was a lot of litter lying around that we made an effort to tidy up and put in the bin. Please be respectful here folks!!
Inspiring to see Joey and Robert Dunlop are forever remembered. Was a little sad to see garbage spread out throughout the memorial, but that doesn’t matter. Important to see and remember the best racers of there time.
Who in Northern Ireland doesn't know of the Dunlop family and their dedication to motorbike racing, and the tragic consequences of their passion.nnThe garden is split into two sections, with the first half containing a memorial to Joey Dunlop, including a sculpture of him astride his Honda bike - a gloriously affectionate tribute to the late rider.nnThe other section of the garden contains tributes to Joey's brother Robert, and Robert's son William, who also both lost their lives racing. The sculpture of Robert features him in celebratory mode, his bottle of winner's champagne held aloft. A few feet away his son stands proud.nnThere's something deeply moving about this garden - one family so often visited by tragedy. Perhaps it's the fear that further sculptures will be added - the roads seem determined to claim the whole clan.nnThe garden itself is immaculately presented, formal, inviting, with several benches to allow visitors to sit and contemplate.nnJust a short stroll away is the train station and beside that, Joey's bar. So dedicated fans who wish to pay homage can do so without going too far.
If you are into your bikes then no visit is complete without coming here. It's a fitting and beautiful tribute to THE family of road racing. Situated by the main road it is unusually quiet but that may be the clever traffic lights keeping everything moving but at a respectful pace. I would have given a fiver star review, and know this isn't the venue's fault, but there were a number of empty bottles and broken glass around the benches and entrance to the garden. However take your time take it in when you look at what they have all achieved.
