We enjoyed our time here. It is worth a visit once. The entree fee is 5 EUR. You can spend as much time as you wish here. The place is not crowded at all. There is a hidden cell you can reach there if you use the concrete stairs. The employees are very friendly and I recommend this place.
A nicely restored small castle Originally a castle of the O’Donnell family, this small, but well-fortified castle, was taken over by an English lord after the Flight of the Earls and was transformed into a more stately home. The castle itself has been restored and for a small fee you can enter and do a nice self-guided tour. It’s not the biggest castle in Ireland, but it is a pleasant place and worth a visit.
Me, my hubby and two children aged 8 & 10 visited today 17th Aug and it was just beautiful. The walkway is rocky and uneven so be mindful of this. So many artifacts and stunning pieces. Stairs are quite steep. I love history so it's been one of my favourite spots. Don't visit without stopping off. Entrance fees are: adults €5 Senior €4 Student £3 Family €13 Kids go free.
Donegal Castle is interesting, it's very well preserved. The walls surrounding the castle are also intact. The interior only has a few rooms that are accessible, but each have lots of information and artifacts to view. The guide we had was on his first ever tour, but did a great job and was very knowledgeable.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes

Visited 17/03/2022. Lovely little castle to walk around whilst in Donegal. Tickets are reasonably priced at €5 for adults. Staff were also very friendly.
First visit here, I was impressed by the restoration of the beautiful building. Lovely to see how it may have been in times gone by.
Donegal Castle is very close to the town centre and was great for the rainy weather that day. It is indeed more than interesting – after passing the open part in front, visitors enter the building and find a toilet and rooms filled with information. Stairs lead up to another floor, where there is the restored dining area, and finally on top is another room telling of the history of the castle and the town.
Short day trip started in Donegal and also the first visit to the Donegal Castle. It has been serving surrounding Town as a Fort in defense as early in 9th-10th century from as it is believed Galls from north Vikings. Later has been upgraded through years and you can see how it has been developed. Sir Basil Brook was the latest "ruler" of the Castle who added towers to the castle. "Sir Basil Brooke was succeeded by his son Henry, who defended Donegal Castle and the surrounding district against the Irish following the outbreak of the Rebellion of 1641. The Castle was captured briefly in 1651 by the Marquess of Clanricarde, though following its relief by Sir Charles Coote it appears to have been soon recovered by Henry Brooke. Under the Cromwellian settlement, Henry Brooke received further grants of land, including what was to become the Colebrooke Estate in County Fermanagh, now the seat of his descendant Lord Brookeborough. Henry died in 1671 and was buried in Donegal Abbey. Donegal Castle did not remain a place of residence of the Brookes, and by the 18th century, it had been abandoned and allowed to fall into ruin." A warmly recommendation for all visitors in search of historic and historical information to fulfill their daily dose of the knowledge. Enjoy
Absolutely fantastic employee here. An older man who was very kind and helpful. Really enjoyed our visit and his teaching us extra info.
