This is a fantastic museum! Lots of history, memorabilia, and photo ops. A guided track visit of Churchhill Downs is included with price of admission. There is a stable outside with 2 miniature horses. The movie in the Great Hall is really cool!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
We pulled in with a few minutes to spare before the next guided tour and were able to park and get tickets in less than 5 minutes. There is plenty of parking and I don’t think you would need to purchase tickets in advance. We went on a Thursday in August. The woman at the front desk, I believe Deb, was very kind and quick with helping us. We went to the grounds tour, the movie directly after, and then the museum. You could do them in any order but this worked for us. Tours and the movie run at specific times so that will require some planning. You could spend easily 2+ hours here and we aren’t even Derby fans. The tour is a little under an hour and then the movie and the museum has two stories with memorabilia. We just did the general tour since admission included these things but other tours are more inclusive and can take you into the back part of the track to see stables and the “town”. We felt the general one was informative and fun for what we paid. The track is easy to get to from the museum. This is a good bit of walking with distance between things so I think if you have mobility issues, strollers, or kids you should plan accordingly. It was also hot outside, and there is no shade where they take you to view the track and talk. Also this may be obvious but if you are “smell sensitive” plan accordingly. It smells like mud, horses, and flowers so it’s a lot to take in at once especially with it being hot it just radiates. It was $40 for two people and that included everything above, which I think is reasonable! No charge for parking and you can walk the external grounds outside of the gates free or charge but not access any of the things beyond the gates. Worth going to at least once.
Absolutely fascinating museum!!! tells you all about the derby and about Churchill Downs. all its history and practically anything you’ll ever need to know about it. There are two floors of many, really nice exhibits that offer a lot of information about the historic race. Nice gift shop . They offer tours to go into Churchill Downs and see the race track!!!
Today, I visited the Kentucky Derby Museum and had an incredible experience. We explored the museum on a self-guided tour, followed by a guided tour of the racetrack. Both were informative and engaging. I highly recommend this to anyone in the area—it’s a must-see!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes

Always a great experience. Took my mother in law to visit as she has never been. We did an early morning barn and backside tour. Great tour with lots of information about what life is like in the industry. The early morning tours give you an opportunity to see these majestic creatures up close getting a work out in on the track. After the tour we visited the museum and cafe. Definitely recommend a Woodford Spire from the cafe, if you enjoy whiskey.
Very nice self guide tour, lot of stuff to see. Then your guide will take you to the track. Can't remember the young man's name but he was amazing, ask questions he has the answers. All and all we really enjoyed it.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
The Kentucky Derby museum was great, and we loved the exhibit dedicated to Secretariat. However, the "Stars and Spires" walking tour we took was a complete bust. We want to do the barns and backside tour but unfortunately, they had only one ticket available in the two consecutive tours that was available when we there. So, it's better to BOOK AHEAD for the barns and backside tour but if you didn't, SKIP the stars and spires tour unless you're the type interested in seeing large empty halls and dining areas. Your admission ticket anyway includes a free guided tour to the racetrack and that should be more than sufficient. As for the museum, it will take at least a couple of hours to go through including the films they have. Also, don't forget to go outside and visit a working barn with horse in it as well as the headstones of racehorses buried outside the museum. Overall, this place is a MUST DO in Louisville but SKIP the stars and spires tour!
We did an exclusive tour it was great we got to experience all the areas the barns the stands the clubs and learned amazing things Brent was our guide he was full of knowledge about this historic place. Behind the scenes was really awesome to see the working trackVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
The museum is nicely taken care off with plenty of information. However, the horse simulators do not work, and for the “greatest race” screening we had to sit in the floor, not enough chairs. The Churchill downs track visit is very short, they don’t show much, basically take you to the stands and that’s it. We thought it was a waste of time, would not recommend.
