David Theatre Royal
"The Grade I Listed Newcastle Theatre Royal is both neo-classical monument and cultural engine, with an annual audience of 400,000 and over 400 performances each year. An independent charity, it presents the finest drama, the brightest West End musicals, the cream of the comedy circuit, award winning ballet and dance, family friendly shows, sensational opera – and probably the best Pantomime in the country.Over the centuries, many of the great names of the English stage have played at the Royal, from Keane to Irving, Olivier to Dench and the Hollywood greats Orson Welles, Charlton Heston and Jack Lemmon have also trodden the famous boards; Sir Ian McKellen has described the Theatre Royal as his favourite theatre."

We saw Jersey Boys which was excellent but the 1st seats we had were a restricted view although they weren't sold as such. It was our first time at this theatre so we didn't have any prior knowledge of good or bad areas. We spoke to Box Office & moved forward a tad which was better but not ideal as we still couldn't see everything despite having empty seats in front of us. Loved the ceilings and decor though. Note the photos were taken standing up by the balcony or stairs.
Wonderful experience, went with family to watch snow white and 7 dwarfs pantomime, excellent show. The stage was great, but it was very crowded with many adults not wearing masks. They have got toilets as well.
The Theatre Royal is stunning inside and out. An upgrade to the seating would be a worthy investment - while there's a need for preservation of a facility there are also the comforts expected by a 21st century audience to consider. There are rows with extra leg room but they do come at a price. Didn't try the food or drink, but there are plenty of other reviews that mention this aspect.
It was a really good show. Fantastic singing and dancing through out. Some bits were a bit cheesey and I didn't like the "come on Newcastle" being shouted out repeatedly but it was good and all of the ladies went full out and gave fantastic performances x
Good venue, with good sound and setup. Takes a long while to get a drink as it's very crowded. Seating area doesn't give you much room but overall a reasonable setup. Saw the book of mormon here which was a fantastic show and I would recommend providing you are not easily offended
What a wonderful experience, thank you. Me, the Wife & The Boy went for our first Family theatre experience to see the Da Vinci Code. From the moment we approached the doors we were made to feel welcomed. As I'm currently on crutches due to a leg in a cast, they asked if I would be OK with our current seats. I was quite happy to squeeze in early before anyone else turned up. Oh no, wait one moment. They came back to us with an upgrade to our very own box! Excellent. This just heightened the experience for us all. With the Box curtain drawn, it felt like we had our very own show in the privacy of our own home. " That was awesome Dad, I'll break my leg next time." The Boy laughed. The actors put on a great show, the staff were professional and courteous. Everyone was friendly. We will definitely be taking in another show in the future. We've been converted. Thank you again to the whole Team.
A great and historic venue with freindly staff and very disability Freindly. Was in tge Upper circle for Northern ballet and unfortunately the heat was almost too much. Very much worth a visit for the archetecture alone, with the added bonus of a show was simply delightful. I hope they find a solution to the heat issues.
Spacious and with excellent acoustics, Theater Royal is another Jewel of the North. Comparing theater Royal London to Newcastle theater Royal, we didn't miss a thing when seated in the amphitheater. London's theater Royal would give the same satisfaction to watch the performance if sat right at the front of the theatre.
Second visit to this theatre, looks excellent. Only issue was the bar. Very limited choice of snacks, either olives or sweets. Also I had a G&T that tasted remarkably most unhgin like! My wife had a coffee that had clearly been standing for some time. Both undrinkable. And ice cream at £3 a tub. Other than that it was great, play was enjoyable.
Theatre is certainly grand but uncomfortable for modern folk. The lager was £6 a pint and flat and the ice cream wasn’t doddingtons and the spoon wasn’t fit for purpose. The show was Joseph and it was atrocious in every way. Like a school production with poor stage design and costumes and Jason Donovan as an Elvis Pharaoh I couldn’t believe what I was watching.
