I haven’t yet got on their tiny, one an *hour* at best ie if not cancelled trains without the apocalyptic crowding u can see in the photos happening. This happened on a Thursday morning but it has been every day I have done this journey and has been even worse at the weekend. I’ve had to do this with a 14 month old baby and have also seen disabled and elderly passengers really struggling. It’s a nightmare and as one of the other review said: a national disgrace. This service goes through major cities such as Birmingham and Manchester- it’s obvious to a fool there needs to be way more services per hour and more carriages. What a joke.
Absolutely nightmare of a rail service. Caught the Edinburgh to Plymouth train from Newcastle upon Tyne heading to Birmingham..train full when it reached Newcastle, people standing with no where to move. Me & my 7 year old grandson stuck in the door way area with 14 other people. No working toilets. You couldn't get to a toilet anyway the utter amount of people, the train was then cancelled at Leeds & everyone told to get off. I had no idea what connection I needed to get to Birmingham, no help from cross country staff they just left people stranded at Leeds about 300 people. Managed to get a Plymouth train going via. Birmingham that was packed just as bad its run like a cattle truck. Highly dangerous way to operate a service. Cross country trains need to be replaced they should lose the franchise....our railway needs to be government run again it's not fit for purpose.. avoid cross country trains.
I travelled from Birmingham New Street to Derby on Sunday 9th of July on the 12-34 train I inadvertently went into a first-class, carriage. As soon as the train left Birmingham New Street the guard came through to my surprise, checked my ticket and said I was in the first class carriage. I would have to pay for an upgrade, I apologised and he said to go into another carriage they have seats available, I went into the other carriages and they did not have seats available, I then went back to the guard there were two of them in the office, I said there are not any seats available. You have people standing by the doors, could I possibly use one of the empty seats in first class, the train does not stop until Derby so I would not be taking anyone's seat, I am 72 years old my left ankle is so painful I can hardly stand up, also in London a guard said on one occasion if there are not any seats available in the other carriages, we are at liberty to provide a seat for you. Therefore you can use a first-class seat without having to pay extra if it is not booked. They said no, you would have to pay for an upgrade. I noticed that they only came through and checked people’s tickets in the first-class carriage which was 90% empty, photos are enclosed. The two of them could not be bothered to go to all the other carriages which were full up to check and see if people are travelling without a ticket. They just wanted to be awkward and just checked the first-class carriage, so they were not doing their job properly in the first place. What a shocking way to treat the passengers, they are a national disgrace. They are always on strike expecting our support and this is the way they treat you. You certainly will not get any support from me in the future. Mick Lynch, next time you appear on television, protecting your members, please mention these 2 guards sitting in their cosy office, who could not even be bothered to check all the other carriages, which were full to see if they had tickets to travel with, they would rather throw a 72-year-old pensioner who can hardly walk out of the first class carriage, which was empty. These are the type of people you are protecting. What use are they to cross-country trains.
The armpit of train services in the UK - Travelled from Bristol to Taunton with wife and newborn, no spaces for buggies. Guard couldn’t tell me where any priority seats would be or any spaces for a buggy. If you see a free space grab it - Thanks very much, helpful when you pay £36 for 2 returns. Wife and I are able but not helpful if it was a solo parent or someone with a disability. Staff aren’t very well informed to common requests and stand around blankly getting paid handsomely to do very little. No wonder everyone resents paying to get the train.
Will never travel with Cross Country again after yesterday!!! Train was rammed had to stand for two hours next to a toilet. Train was red hot and luggage was everywhere, Train was old and dirty and only had 4 carriages to go from Aberdeen to Penzance absolutely ridiculous never again!!!
On Tuesday, the 13th of August 2024 we took the 08:08 train from Leeds to Edinburgh, we managed to obtain tickets for first class. I must say from the start of the journey to the very end of the journey we were very well looked after indeed, upon our arrival onto the train Mark who was serving food, realised I was blind and he was so helpful and so supportive he made us all feel extremely welcome and he was always coming by to make sure if we needed any more drinks snacks or anything like that. He was a very funny gentleman and had lots of laughs with my nephew, to try and help him relax as he was a little bit nervous on the train. Also Mark made sure he explained where my drink was when he put it on the table and he even poured the milk into my tea for me so I didn’t scold myself. This gentleman suddenly left the Train at Newcastle but I must say he is an absolute, first class member of staff and the business needs to give him a chief executive award for his excellence and service to customers. When he left the Train the first class service was rubbish. The ladies serving came down once and my sister had to go up and request another drink afterwards it definitely wasn’t the first class experience from Newcastle to Edinburgh at all. But I must say the seats were extremely comfy and plenty of spacious legroom.can’t wait for my next trip on this wonderful companies trains
I would rate this company -5* if i could. This company is the worst train service provider in the UK, I'm still amazed after all these years how they are even allowed to operate??? The trains are always delayed, cancelled or full to the rim! Before the covid pandemic there were trains every 0.5 hr, but now it's every 1 h. Waiting for the day the UK government, finally decide to take this company legal action of the dreadful service they provide!
The train from Derby to Birmingham was overcrowded. There was absolutely no standing space so myself and a group of maybe 20 other people we left in derby despite having bought tickets for this specific train. The next train wasn't for over an hour. This led to the loss of personal events for myself and family. Very disappointed.
Possibly the worst train company in the known universe. If you unfortunately you do end up having to travel on their trains you may end up having to sit on the dirty floor as there are often not enough seats as the company seems to want to put as few carriages on their trains. Avoid if you are elderly, disabled, have underlying health issues or travel with children. There are often no refreshments even on long distance trains so bring supplies including water. The train toilets are disgusting and the bins are often overflowing leaving people to sit on the floor surrounded by rubbish. If you want to experience what some of the worst Indian trains are like without actually travelling to India, then these trains give you that experience, but at ticket prices the size of a small country’s entire annual defence budget. Flying to India is possibly an easier way to get drinking water than being on one of their trains. The full miserable experience is available to book online or through their app. Enjoy
Absolute jokers. Cattle class stuffing of people They ask us to reserve seats and people travelling sit anywhere. Simply a joke. No space.to store bags properly. It's ok for guys with a back pack at best.
