Crookston Castle

Story

Crookston Castle is located in the Pollok area of south-west Glasgow, Scotland. The castle is located some 5 miles (8 km) south-west of the city centre, and 3 miles (5 km) east of Paisley, overlooking the Levern Water, just before its confluence with the White Cart Water.Crookston is surrounded by a defensive ring-ditch that dates back to the 12th century when Sir Robert de Croc, who also gave his name to the village of Crookston, built a timber and earth castle. Remains of a chapel founded by de Croc in 1180 have been uncovered. Evidence of an even earlier fortification on the same site has also been found. The lands of Crookston were bought by Sir Alan Stewart in 1330, and passed to Sir John Stewart of Darnley, in 1361. The Darnley Stewarts replaced the early castle with the present stone structure around 1400.In 1489 the Stewart Earl of Lennox rebelled against James IV. James responded by bringing the cannon Mons Meg from Edinburgh, and bombarding the castle, virtually destroying its western end, and ensuring a quick surrender. In 1544 the castle was besieged and taken by the Earl of Arran and Cardinal Beaton, while the then Earl of Lennox was defending Glasgow Castle. At this time, Crookston was regarded as the principal house of the earls of Lennox.

Absolutely beautiful wee castle, you can get to the very top, going up winding stairs then up 3 ladders not for the faint hearted, but definitely worth the views. I would highly recommend it. No parking but ample parking on the surrounding streets.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Interesting labyrinth of a castle, with a bit of a climb up some treacherous ladders at the end. Not easily accessible but an interesting place if you're able. Impressed a date so much that I got a kiss at the top, so it gets 5 stars Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
A castle with all the bells & whistles right in Glasgow...and it's free. Dungeons, turrets & battlements, this has it all. It even has a medieval loo, that you can see how they spent a penny. I drove past this for the last 45 years, and this is the first time I thought I'd stop to have a look. Wow what a view from the top. History too. Just go...and take the kids for a walk & history.
I love that there is a castle, a piece of history left untouched, near my neighborhood. I walk there when I find time, it is close by car but takes about 1,5 hour back and forth on foot. I am so disappointed that whenever I visit, it is closed. It was closed due to weather a couple of times when I went, but the weather was decent enough for me to walk back then. I decided to go again yesterday, since the weather was warm and sunny. It was closed again. This time it said on the sign at the gate that the keykeeper was on holiday and will be back next month. I did look online for opening hours and any additional notes if it would be closed, only one that I could find said it would be closed between May 18-31. So I assumed it would be open this time, on June 3rd, but no. I don't know if I will ever get to visit when it's actually open.
So that was second time when I couldn't see that place, I was there 4:50pmlast entry is 5pm and weather was beautiful so that wasn't weather condition and gate was closed. There was behind gate extremly rude lady and when I asked if we can enter because there were people in castle still and it it should be opened up to 5.30pm she said "no" when I asked why she said in very rude way "no because no"... Shocking attitude.
Beautiful place to sit in the summer
Very nice castle, well maintained. Access to several rooms inside is available along with the tower's terrace - that requires a climb using metal ladders inside. Well worth the travel!
This castle is a little far out from the city centere, but it is certainly worth the trip. Entrance is free. There is no gift shop or restrooms or personnel there. The castle itself has several rooms to explore and you can go to the top of the one remaining tower. Please note that as with many castles, some areas can be difficult to reach. If you are interested in castles, I recommend this one.
Beautiful castle near Glasgow. Worth to visit!! Beautiful views from the top. Free to visit!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
I loved the castle, it looks peaceful because of the vast green area around the castle. The inside part is even greater because it makes you think back in the days of the history of how they used to live, and the architecture that used to domain in that century. Therefore, it was a very good experience that I would recommend to my friends.
