Lovely little cafe, carefully hidden down a side street, an oasis of calm in the otherwise crazy Christmas rush elsewhere. It was my first time visiting this cafe and I was not disappointed. I had decaf tea and a warm pork baguette with apple sauce, some salad and nice crispy chips came with it. Other people were having full meals which all looked great. I will definitely be going back again for a full meal, can't wait.
To escape the chaos of the extravaganza we made a detour here. I used to come here often as a child with my parents so it felt nostalgic stepping in. The decor is very Mediterranean..with tiled floors and soft fairy lights. Anyway on entering we were informed we could sit anywhere that wasn't reserved . Choosing a seat in front of the semi open kitchen I wondered how it had a 5 star hygiene rating when there was a big bug zapper light above the food. Browsing the menu everything was reasonably priced serving homely British food. From fish and chips to lamb shank. I chose the beef stew with a choice of red cabbage ..to drink a chocolate milkshake I was hung over . Himself the homemade chilli and a americano because they didn't understand the concept of a flat white. My stew reminded me of what my mum used to make. Lots of tender root veg with succulent beef. However it lacked seasoning and the pot of pickled cabbage served no purpose on the plate. I thought it would be in the stew? This was served with some thick wholesome bread. The shake was forgettable. The chilli came with microwave rice which when challenged the waitress denied this and explained it was precooked rice heated through. Which is even worse but it was definitely microwave rice. Observing those that came and went I thought the rice liar was rude to every customer. She had no enthusiasm and her entire body language showed she didn't want to be there. Quite a few people were turned away with no attempt to make it work. She also whisked the coffee away before my boyfriend had a chance to consume it so we made her return it. This is a great shame..once a elderly gent used to run the show and he was so sweet and kind. His absence completely negatively impacts the place and the food has lost its quality. Such a pity..I will not return.
Excellent food, friendly staff, very reasonably priced for the quality of the food. Top notch little gem of a restaurant.
