Story

In the heart of the Test River Valley, in keeping with the Country Inn atmosphere, Clos du Marquis offers the quaint elegance of a "French Auberge" with small beamed dining rooms and a lounge with log fires in winter. The private dining room is situated in the oldest part of the building , the original stable. The garden, where the herbs grow, offers a gazebo for summer dining. All this is conducive for a relaxed and memorable time, with professional but unobtrusive service, where Madame Marquis and staff will welcome you.

With the success of our authentic French restaurant and by popular demand, we have opened a French gourmet pantry, cookery school and French hampers.

Excellent food and service here, was the cheapest of our 3 meals out and the best. Conidering the quality it is good value for money. Parking is easy in the evening, we parked right outside. It is not very big so a lovely atmosphere.
Had a fabulous meal. Ambiance was warm and friendly, Garth looked after our table very professionally. Everyone had starters, from kidneys to scallops. Mains were grilled hake, pork fillets and quail. We finished the meal off with a delicious and interesting cheese board. The Muratie Cabernet Sauvignon was exceptional as always. Best restaurant in Stockbridge.

Thank you to the Clos du Marquis for an excellent dinner which was a belated birthday celebration and a wonderful end to a hot summer's day visiting Stockbridge Open Gardens. We really enjoyed the ambience and attentive but informal service. There are clearly good reasons why this small business endures thanks to the couple who own and run it. We found the menu concise but excellently executed. We really enjoyed the Menu du Terroir options creole prawns and duck and equally the A la carte choices scallops and Dover Sole. The little added touches of the canapes and bread and the delicious chocolate to finish were appreciated. Honestly, we couldn't fault anything and hope to return one day. There are only a few tables and a single service, so book well ahead is our advice.
This was where I took my wife on our first date and have been back every year since including to propose. The menu is small and excellently prepared. The dishes change frequently but are always authentic French. Garth looks after you expertly and knows what you desire often before you do! Outstanding food doesn't come cheap but Clos du Marquis is always value for money. I cannot recommend it enough.
We went with another couple for lunch and all felt it was the best experience in our recent memory which is saying something as we love eating out! Sorry I didn't take pictures of the food which was delicious from the amuse-bouche to the chocolate truffles served complimentary at the end of our meal. Champagne excellent, crab starter excellent, rabbit with mustard sauce absolutely divine. But in addition to the lovely food and wine, the owner was so very welcoming without being intrusive, served perfectly so we always felt taken care of but our conversations never interrupted. It was like the Gavroche where no one appears until you need them. To take it to perfect 5 stars, the restaurant was immaculately clean and the decorations and loos beautifully done. That is where these pictures are from as I would like to copy the idea - sorry no pictures of the well presented food......
Good food at a reasonable price. Maitre Di grates unfortunately. Isn't able to distinguish between pickiness and genuine medical needs, so errs on the side of pickiness and gives a lecture on the need for salt in food. Lucky he didn't get a dressing down in front of his customers. What a prat!

We had a meal here at the weekend. OMG it was so nice to go out for a meal and get treated like a customer and not just another number. They only have 6 or 7 tables and so the diners are the centre of attention from start to finish. It was a pleasure to have aperitifs and wines served correctly and in the right glassware. They serve fish with a fish knife, I can't remember when I was last served fish with a fish knife. The menu has a good choice of dishes, everything we ordered was delicious and looked beautiful prepared and presented. Garth is a great host and makes you feel very welcome. We will definitely be going back again soon.
