Not been since there has been an apparent refurbishment but my word, this place needed it! Awful smelly & dirty interior... the interior decor like a 1992 time capsule! Ordered a cheese and onion toastie which must have contained about 4 or 5 flecks of grated cheese and way too much onion. So I basically paid over the odds for an onion sandwich. Such a shame as its a lovely location with a brilliant play area for the kids just outside. The place just seems to be profiteering due to it's location rather than caring about its offerings which are woeful and terribly over priced for what you get.

Newly refurbished: nice to see the restaurant open again. We enjoyed the teacakes and coffee, and a chat with the original owner.

Edit: Following our second trip here I must change my review slightly due to the idiotic rule of no ice-cream cones on the cafe, even though they sell them. Just to clarify my wife and I along with our two year old & mother inlaw popped in for a Coffee and cake. After making an order of £20 plus my wife asked of we could have an ice-cream cone for our kid. A straight out no and stated can only have a cone if you are outside. Only in a dish inside..Soo my wife asked for the manager only to be told the same. Now for the silly bit. My kid prefers the wafer cone to the ice-cream itself. We asked can we have a wafer on its own. The answer was no. Seriously you can't bend your rules slightly? Anyway we ended up having ice-cream in a dish and picking the cone up on the way out. This place has had a nice revamp. Decor is very nice. Nice choice of food here and it taste good. We had a cheese & onion toastie and a fresh pizza. They have a great choice of ice-cream also. Prices are reasonable, though I didn't get some of the price differences between pizzas. They seem inconsistent. Anyway.. Good views of the sea and there's a really good park next door for the kids. Lots of free parking also with toilets.

This café, with its somewhat humble ugly and squat brick exterior is a not-so-hidden gem, spectacularly located on the western cliff tops of Penarth, overlooking the Hafren/Severn river. Whether you walk the famous clifftop path looking for the view (National Museum and Galleries, Cardiff) Sisely painted or settle down on a bench to watch the moody brown river plied incessantly by working vessels - you'll surely appreciate the warm welcome inside Cioni's. I recall years of occasional visits and each time enjoying the heart-warming Italian home cooking (or ordinary café menu food instead, if you or the little ones insist) prepared and served with love by the various family members. Although my memories of years gone by darken, and so did the decor, like many I was concerned that the place closed at the end of the autumn for refurbishment. I needn't have worried, because the younger generation of the family have taken over - the decorations at least, I presume - the inside has been stylishly simplified to open up the space, wood panels painted a bright neutral and natural sky colour and the tables and chairs all neater and smarter.. And the menu likewise has been sharpened up in presentation and content. This is a family friendly café bistro, where the key common ingredient is good ingredients brought together simply but with care and delicious Italian style sauces and herbs, from antipasti to pastas, carne e pesci and pizzas galore and the most generous ices in traditional glasses... But worth the visit just for Italian coffees and Welsh cake (I still dream of the iced custard tart) the entrancing view and the nearby child distracting play area and in summer (assuming it still runs) pitch and putt golf. There's a generous amount of free parking around the leeward sides of the building.
