Story

The Church of St John the Baptist in Axbridge, Somerset, England was built in the 13th century and has been designated as a grade I listed building.Work on the current building began in the early 15th century, and grew from an earlier building dating back to about 1230. The church is built of limestone and decorated with Doulting stone, while the steps are an interesting example of Dolomitic Conglomerate (pudding stone). The crossing tower, which was built around 1400, is over 100ft high, and holds six bells, one of which dating from 1723 was made by Edward Bilbie of the Bilbie family. The statue on the east side is that of St John the Baptist. On the west side is a king — perhaps Henry VII, which would place it after 1485. The North aisle ceiling retains some mediaeval painted panels, and amongst the carved bosses is the head of a Green Man, with leaves sprouting around his face. The nave roof is Jacobean and dates from 1636.

Nice little church, architecture is really good especially the ceilings, old gravestones. Set in a really nice little square. Not much parking around here.
Beautiful old church. Enjoyed the brass band led carols. Only one member of the congregation welcomed a new face though.
An absolute beautiful church with graveyard that is steeped in true English history, a perfect place to pray or to just simply gather your thoughts.
Great atmosphere and service with welcoming, friendly people. The building itself is lovely, too, and well worth a visit.
We stopped off in Axbridge for a bit of a nose about - popped up to take a look at the church as it looked impressive. Popped head through the door as well, looks like a well looked after church.
I was christened here in '55 and have always loved the church. So beautiful, peaceful and 'safe'. Makes me feel that redemption is real.
St John the Baptist Church, The Church Of England Religion I still follow today. The heart of the town stands so beautifully over looking the square and where Cheddars Market cross had once stood, Its magnificent looks only get better once your up close and can see closely the detail of the stone, Gargoyles, Stained Glass, intricate carvings, beautiful blue and white ceilings. I've been to the top I've nelt in the pews and I've study the words inscribed. I'm always amazed by the fact that every time I'm there I find something new I never noticed before. Our current vicar Reverend Tim is a favourite amount the children for his kind and caring demeanour he welcomes all with open arms, They hold coffee mornings and messy play for the children all of whom wildly race, play, draw and read around the church until their hearts are content. The doors always open you will find solice for your thoughts on a quiet afternoon.
It is a nice church. Could have done with some lights on as it was quite dark the day we visited. My wife was disappointed there was no facility to light candles for departed loved ones.
A very beautiful church to visit and take in its ancient history and architecture. Definitely worth a visit.
Lucky find after cheddar gorge..the church is lovely.. Some nice places to eat in the town. worth the visit
