British Rail will soon be attempting to reclaim the record for the fastest train on the planet. It is their intention to run the train from Chepstow to Gloucester before the end of the decade. It will be travelling at a staggering 370 m.p.h. and will arrive in Gloucester ten minutes before it leaves Chepstow. It is estimated that the project will cost 2.5 billion pounds, most of which will be utilised to fit hanging baskets complete with flowers along the route. If successful it is thought that the train will eventually run between Cheltenham Spa and Newport.
I visited the town by car en route home from the Pilning area.nGood points of interest are Chepstow Castle, riverside walk, a museum, town gate and walls.
Great location, interesting castle, lovely location next to the wye. If you want to travel further tintern abbey is a few miles away accessible by a greenway.
Attractive town central area. Famous old cast iron bridge between England and Wales. Reasonable selection of restaurants, cafes and pubs.
Nice little railway station. It has a good looking station building, although it did not appear to be staffed during my visit. The bridge also caught my eye, as unlike most stations it actually has some character.nnIt has regular Transport for Wales services between Cheltenham and Cardiff/Maesteg as well as the occasional CrossCountry train between Brimingham/Nottingham and Cardiff.nnThere is no step free access available to get to the Cardiff bound platform. There are no tactile markings on the platform edge, but there are audible announcements in both Welsh and then English.
